Trying to decide between Port and Starboard side for our Eastern Caribbean Cruise. We will have a balcony and would prefer more shade then sun. Also which has better views sailing in this direction? This is our iteniary.

Start: Miami Grand Turk San Juan St. Kitts St. Maarten End: Miami

It ends up being about 50/50. Take a look at a map...

It is SE from Miami to GT and then on to San Juan and to St. Kitts. So you will have morning sun on the port and afternoon on the starboard, approx. It is north to St. Maarten and north west back to Miami so the opposite will be true.

There is no way to know where/how you will be docked in the ports so you can't go by that. And then of course the piers are not situated so that you can determine - for example, the pier may be on the north side of the island but running east and west.

I can tell you in San Juan, that the town/fort (closest) will be on the starboard side as you pull out, and so will Miami (if memory serves).

I wouldn't overthink it making actual location on the ship more important. Agree that the San Juan forts will be on your starboard as you exit the harbor. If you happen to have an evening departure after dark, that's very beautiful but you can always go up to Lido to watch if you happen to have a cabin on Port.
