Pier upgrade on RCCL?

A question please about 'pier upgrades':

We have only been once on an American cruise ship. It was on NCL just after September 11th, through Asia. Because of the timing the ship was nearly empty and we paid almost nothing and still got upgraded to a huge ocean view room without even asking or anything. For the price I paid I just assumed we would be locked in the broom cupboard - but no, we got this luxury suite.

This time we are paying a more normal price and have booked a category L inside cabin on RCCL's Legend of the Seas. I read on this board that you can ask for an upgrade at the pier. What is the best procedure though - to ask for an upgrade thereby being charged for it as indicated above, or to say nothing and pray? If one does decide to ask for an upgrade and pay for it, is it better to go and embark as early as possible or later?

Any experience greatly appreciated.

Hi there:

First of all RCCL does not offer complimentary upgrades like most other lines do.

If you want to upgrade you have to pay for it. Prices depends on which category you are in now and which category you would like to go to. For example inside to inside, or inside to outside, or inside to balcony, or inside to suite, etc.....

For a pier upgrade, the earlier you check in the better your chances (depending on how full the ship is). When you check in, check in your assigned cabin as if you were going to that cabin. When you have your seapass card and everything is in order, at the end of the counter there should be the Pier Co-Ordinators desk.

Go there and ask what kind of upgrades are available. She will advise you and let you know the price.

However, if you see a sign that says "No cabins Available" ignore it and ask anyway.

Hope this helps.
