Ft Lauderdale for the day... what to do?

We'll be in Ft Lauderdale for the day. What in the world shall we do? Where should we eat? We could use some help!

We're open to any kinds of suggestions, from something quiet to something action packed, but we likely will not be renting a car and will be staying at Renaissance, downtown SE 17th St.

Thanks in advance.:)

When you say for the day, do you mean you are sailing at 5pm or the next day?

If I had plenty of time, I would sign up for one of those intracoastal boat tours of the the millionaire homes. DH would go to Gulfstream Park to watch the horses and spend the evening at Hollywood Dog Track.

Your hotel will have tons of brochures for fun activities. Personally, I would take a bus to the beach and enjoy cocktails and dining at one of the restaurants along the beach.

Less than 30 days until we start driving to Florida for our winter vacation--which includes a week on Carnival Triumph.

Let me know what kind of food, ambiance, and price range you have in mind and I will help point you in the right direction. Also, the Zagat guide for South Florida is very helpful.

For sporting events you don't find many places consider going to watch Jai Alai being played at http://www.dania-jai-alai.com/.

There are at least two hall of fames in the area...

But if you have the time I think the best activity, and hardest to get somewhere else, is a boat ride through the Everglades. There are several places just west of town to choose from.

I spent a week in Ft. Lauderdale in June. If you enjoy shopping, excellent restaurants and a scenic river, take a taxi to Las Olas Boulevard. Wonderful array of boutiques and interesting shops, art galleries, diverse restaurants, and only a block away from a river where you can grab the Water Taxi (inexpensive) and tour the Ft. Lauderdale riverway. The taxi driver gives a mini-tour of mansions built along the river, many of which are owned by celebs. It's a relaxing and fun way to spend a few hours.

I lived in downtown Ft Lauderdale for many years.

Everyone's touched upon the best things to do:

(1) Walk down Las Olas

(2) Take the Jungle Queen to see the fancy homes

(3) Shop at the Galleria

(4) Visit Beachplace/Riverwalk (both have tons of restaurants); Riverwalk is near Himmarshee Street, which has clubs and bars, the science museum, the Center for the Performing Arts, and the Art Museum

(5) Walk along Ft Lauderdale Beach Blvd

(6) Definitely see Seminole Hard Rock

Have fun!
