Rome - Attending the Angelus at the Vatican before boarding in Civitavecchia?

Hi! We will be sailing on the MSC Meraviglia in a few months departing from Civitavecchia. We are very interested in attending the Papal Angelus in St Peter’s Square which is scheduled for 12pm on our embarkation day. Our ship is scheduled to depart at 7pm.

Has anybody attended the Angelus? What time do you recommend arriving at St Peter’s Square? How long does it take? More importantly, What’s the latest you’d depart Rome on embarkation day?

As much as I’d love to attend the Angelus, I don’t want to risk missing our ship! Thanks for any input that you may provide

I haven't done this, but from reading it appears most people say that arriving about an hour in advance is fine (no tickets required) for the Angelus. This site gives some details on what to expect:

If you have private transportation arranged, you should be fine leaving Rome as late as 2:00 or even 2:30 pm. (I might push it even a bit more, but not everyone would be comfortable arriving much later than 4:00 pm...)

Thanks for that link! I was thinking that if we could be on the road by 1:30pm, it should work out. From that article and what I’ve seen online, it should be a fairly quick event.

I called MSC today and asked what’s the latest I could check in and they said 5:30pm. Leaving Rome at 1:30pm should hopefully give us plenty of time.

Once again thanks!

We did a land vacation to Rome this past month and attended the Angelus on a a Wednesday. It was was holiday as well (August 15) so it was busier.

We got there about an hour before. You will have to go through metal detectors.

It started promptly at noon and he spoke for a little over ten minutes!

It was a definite highlight of our trip!

Thanks for the photos Kerry! Truly looking forward to doing this. I believe that it will be a highlight for us as well. The last time I saw the Pope at the Vatican was back in 1987 when John Paul II was the Pope!
