Full sun or shade

I think there are some other factors to consider as well. Like the time of year you're sailing, the heading of the ship itself; the time of day. Considering those factors there may be certain times of the day during your voyage that your deck is in full shade; and likewise in full sun at others.

If the ship is heading north the sun will rise on the starboard side which when the sun is low will be in full sun, then the sun moves overhead giving more and more shadow until you are in full shade all afternoon when the port side gets the sun.

So its all down to heading and sun position.
