Enchantment of the Seas newbie

hiya! Trying to put together our very first cruise and deciding between 2 different lines. It’s a 7 day cruise, western Caribbean.

We’ll have a party of 4 (me, husband, adult daughter and our 4 yr old grandson). The cabin suggested was 7172 (jr suite), which is deck 7, aft). Has anyone stayed in or near this cabin, and was there any noise issues (noticed the lounge is on the deck below)?

Also, I’m a smoker (I know, bad), and the agent I spoke with was somewhat vague about the smoking areas on board. If I understood him correctly there are areas on decks 9 and 10. Are either covered in case of rain, and about how long of a journey is it from deck 7? I also read smoking is permitted in the Casino and bar but since I neither gamble or drink would I still be welcomed there to smoke?

Lastly, has anyone used the children’s program for a preschooler and were you happy with it?

Smoking is allowed on one side of the outside of decks 9 and 10. Deck 9 would have a covered area. The casino is the only indoor area to smoke. No inside bar (except the one in the casino) allows smoking.

A junior suite will be very tight for four. Your daughter and her son would be sharing a rather uncomfortable sofabed which, when it is open, takes up a lot of the floor space.

There is no problem with 7172's location, in terms of noise. It will have a larger balcony than a junior suite on the side of the ship.

As to the smoking issue: Since your cabin is on the aft of the ship, you will have a long walk to the elevators then up to deck 9 or 10. If you "need" to smoke at certain times of the day, you may prefer a cabin closer to elevators.

Lots of smokers gather in the Casino. They seem to think that it's their personal smoking lounge.

For multi-generational cruising I would take a Freedom Class, Freedom, Indipendence or Liberty. The range of activities and venues is awesome, and the kids programs fantastic. The first time we took our grandsons, one was in pre-K and the other in 2nd grade so they were in different programs. First day they agreed to a time-trial—we would come back in an hour. Leave?! Heck NO!!! They were near each other for the security but weren’t competing on projects. Formal nights the kids club stays open late and takes the kids to Windjammer for supper so the parents/guardians can have date night. The older brother got to ride the flow rider while the younger was too small, but the younger was a far better ice skater for never having seen ice except in a glass! (I almost froze!) Aft cabins usually have a fantastic balcony with a semi-obstructed view. You can see out but not down. If you can get a jr.suite that sleeps 6 you get less closet space but more floor space. As far as visiting lounges, etc., no one cares whether you drink or not. The Scooner lounge has nightly piano entertainment, the Centrum, Viking Crown Lounge, Bolero’s, Safari lounge, all have evening entertainment with or without alcohol. (You might wish to get a “Coke Card”).

I wrote a letter to Royal last year about smoking, Parts of it are below.

I got a letter back, generic, not signed, it basically told me there was nothing they could do...

Quoted in part...

This letter is to let you know of our displeasure with your Casino Royale smoking policy.

Casino Royale allows smoking. You usually set aside an area for nonsmoking. Passenger traffic through the casino makes these areas useless. We have noticed a great number of smokers using the casino as a smoking only area who do not participate in any of the gaming you provide. This has turned your casinos into dens of smoke even in the nonsmoking areas.

The concentration of smoke in the casino has become so strong we feel uncomfortable in the Casino Royale. Staying away from your casino is good for our health and wallet, bad for your bottom line and takes some of the fun away from our cruising. Remember, all those smokers not gaming are just polluting the air for those of us who do.

We have cruised fifty-four times on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity ships. We always bring cash for fun in the casino.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT PASSENGERS USING THE CASINO AS A SMOKING AREA ONLY ARE NOT CREATING ANY REVENUE FOR YOU AND ARE CHASING MANY OF US AWAY…

I am sure we are a part of a large group of loyal cruisers that are experiencing this displeasure with your Casino Royale Smoking Policy.

We surely hope someone at Royal Caribbean International will find a solution for this problem.
