On many, many, many threads on this board. YES, you can just walk off the ship.  No one on the ship's crew nor any Cuban official will stop you from walking off the ship as long as you have your passport and a valid Cuban visa.  You will probably also need your electronic room key too.

 

And NO, you cannot get Cuban CUC on the ship.  You can only exchange money once you hit the terra firma in Cuba.

I'm on VO to Cuba on Thursday. Unfortunately it looks like we tender the three nights we are in Cienfuegos. We are taking a tour that goes to Havana via a long bus ride. Not sure how often the tenders will run. Makes it a little harder to venture out on our own. Then we go to Santiago de Cuba but we are only there for half a day.

We were told on the first port talk we could get off and explore on our own. We were in Cienfuegos for three days anchored. We had to tender but the tenders went till 1am. They just asked the first morning that if you didn't have a tour to wait till they got all the tour groups off.
