voyager70 Posted November 24, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 24, 2018 Hello, sorry if this has been discussed already but we're doing a cruise out of Galveston next March (3-10). We always fly in a day early and are debating whether to stay at a hotel near the airport (IAH) and take a Limo service to the port the next morning (would take an afternoon flight with this option) or take a morning flight & stay right in Galveston the day before. I realize weather is highly variable but just wondering from any locals if it would be worth it to stay right at the beach at that time of year. Thanks in advance. Bandera Cruiser Posted November 25, 2018 #2 Share Posted November 25, 2018 We will be on your cruise.😁 The weather that time of year is not very predictable. Of course, if you are coming in from 18 inches of snow, anything we could have would feel like beach weather. I wish I had a more definite answer for you. voyager70 Posted November 25, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted November 25, 2018 Thanks for the reply. I see the average high is mid to high 60's, but last March it was in the high 70's. We're leaning towards staying by the airport, as I'd hate to spend the extra $$ to stay on the beach and be stuck inside for the day.
crazyboys Posted November 25, 2018 #4 Share Posted November 25, 2018 (edited) We are on the Vista March 3rd cruise and we are driving in from Austin the night before and staying at Hilton Garden Inn in Webster, 30 miles from Galveston, and will just drive in the next morning. We cruised in March before and it was in the high 60s. It was also raining but did not delay anything. Good luck and happy cruising. Galveston Cruiser Posted November 25, 2018 #5 Share Posted November 25, 2018 Should there be bad weather, there is so much to do and see in Galveston you will wish you could stay longer. Check out galveston.com for things to do and see. We have wonderful museums: Texas Seaport Museum, Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, J.P. Bryan Museum, Bishop's Palace, Galveston Naval Museum, Railroad Museum, etc. Galveston has the second largest collection of Victorian homes outside of Charleston, S.C. Don't miss Moody Gardens, tree sculptures carved after Hurricane Ike, Pier 21 Theater, 1877 Tall Ship Elissa. Enjoy your cruise, but come enjoy Galveston also! aknguyen Posted November 26, 2018 #8 Share Posted November 26, 2018 The water will still be pretty cool regardless of the air temperature. Also, keep in mind that IAH is 70 miles from the port. A lot can go wrong on that 70 mile stretch of highway the morning of a cruise. If you stay close to the airport, be sure to watch traffic and construction reports so that you will allow enough travel time. I like the Waze app. This website has traffic conditions of major roadways: https://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/ This website shows planned construction events and closures: https://traffic.houstontranstar.org/construction/

We were on a cruise out of Galveston last January and we came in the night before. We stayed at the Marriott at the airport and took Galveston Limo to the port the next morning. It worked great for us. We did not want to have to arrange travel to Galveston so it was just easier for us to treat ourselves before the cruise. They picked us up after the cruise and got us back to the airport in a timely manner. Great company and very pleasant trip.
