Hello all.

Our flight from NY to PR gets in at 5am the day of our cruise. It appears that fascination does not leave until later in the evening. Would you get a cheap hotel/motel to relax in upon arrival till its time to check in on ship or find some place to loiter for 8 hours. Thanks in advance

If you get a hotel either way you will spend about $200 Plus dollars for room and  the transport. Why not have breakfast at the airport and take a tour from the airport with your luggage  and then be dropped off at the  cruise ship.  If the ship leaves that late then you can also have lunch on the ship and still have time to walk around Old Town all afternoon.

The ship's all leave late from SJU, but most can be boarded around 11:00-Noon.  Do some research on the carnival boards here and try to verify that for your ship.  You might only have to "loiter" until around 10:00 when they're likely taking luggage at the port and getting ready to let people board.

By the time you debark the plane, get your luggage, get a taxi, and travel to the port, it will be close to 8:00.  I suggest dropping of luggage with the porters then finding a place for breakfast.  There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the port.  You could then walk to one of the forts to explore until you head back to the port for your Assigned Arrival Time.
