Recent cruisers with kids: do you use a birth certificate rather than a passport?

We took our girl's passport on our recent cruise and left the birth certificate at home. At every Hawaiian port we needed to show a "government issued photo ID" in order to get back on the ship. I had thought about asking some of the parents if they had just a birth certificate for their kids and if that delayed getting through security -- but forgot to ask.

I'm wondering if anyone had a problem.

There is a thread on page 1 titled "Photo ID for 15 yr old". That might help you.
