Getting off too early

Okay- here is my question. What does one do if you are off the ship by 9 am- you are with a group of 12- have tons of luggage- and you can't check into your hotel until 4 pm? Last year we left our luggage at front desk- and went roaming. Thought it was a good idea until we came back and discovered some our our luggage somehow got sent back to the ship. It went on a cruise without us.

Does one book one night/one room at a hotel for the night before you arrive so you have a place to stow all the bags and the people who don't want to roam? Any ideas or thoughts on this subject? Thanks

Oh, and the ship tags were still on. Our luggage wouldn't fit in the bellman's closet- so they stashed it in a back office. The bellman knew about it because he put it there- so who knows. But I was jealous of our luggage- they got to go the the cruise twice.

I don't think booking a room for the night before you arrive would work anyway. Until you actually check in at the desk they don't assign you a room. YOu probably just get charged for it though. Have you checked with your hotel to see how they would deal with your luggage? Also if it's possible to check in early? We've been able to do that at some hotels. We would arrive at around 11 and depending on how busy the hotel is we have been able to check in early. And of course there have been others where we couldn't get in until 3 but they did have a place to store your luggage.

You can always take a picture of the tags if you like them so much. But do take them off. The bellman who accepted your bags may go off duty, or be in a different part of the hotel, and the next person just sees bags that have cruise tags on them. People are not mind readers and whoever sent the bags off to the ship probably thought they were doing a good thing.

This is actually how so many bags go missing through the airline as well. People neglect to take off old tags and bar codes. Can you imagine being a baggage handler and trying to figure out just where bags are supposed to go with numerous tags on them? They don't have a whole lot of time to make the decision and probably send them to the first airport code they see.

Always put 2 luggage tags on your suitcases, in case one gets ripped off, plus identification inside the luggage as well.
