Ferry to St. John - Motion sickness concerns

Hi all. We're considering taking the ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay when we're docked at St. Thomas next week. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the actual ferries. Is there open air seating? Is the ride generally pretty smooth? I'm slightly concerned as I had a bad experience on the ferry from St Martin to Anguilla A couple of years ago. Thanks in advance for any info!

There is open air seating on the top deck. Enclosed seating on deck one. Ride can be rocky depending on lots of different things. It is a rather quick ride over from Red Hook.  The beaches are certainly not to be missed. They are beautiful on St. John.

Depending on the weather you could experience a little rocking. But the ride is just 10 minutes and not nearly as bad as the 45-minute ferry from the ship through rougher waters, or certainly not as bad as the SXM to Anguilla ferry if that helps...
