MTJSR Posted January 16, 2006 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2006 While trying to secure a motel/hotel in Galveston I am finding way too many choices. Not knowing Galveston at all could someone tell me the closest cheap/medium priced to the pier where princess docks. Quick walking distance preferred or perhaps a hotel/motel with a shuttle to the pier. Thanks for the help!
Colo Cruiser Posted January 16, 2006 #2 Share Posted January 16, 2006 I have heard of the Hotel Galvez, have not stayed there but apparently they do ship check in there. :)
TexasMom2 Posted January 16, 2006 #3 Share Posted January 16, 2006 The Tremont House is withing walking distance. It's a Wyndham historical property. It's beautiful and very reasonably priced, and right in the middle of everything on the Strand. There are times in Galveston (like Mardi Gras) where all hotels would become scarce, best to book well in advance. LikeKnew Posted January 16, 2006 #4 Share Posted January 16, 2006 We spent our wedding night (25 years ago) in Galveston at the Hotel Galvez. It is a historic site though the rooms were a bit small. The San Luis is new and very nice with all water view rooms. The http://www.flagshiphotel.com/ is built on a pier; it is interesting because of that and if you like to fish you can. All are along the board walk on the beach side of the island. The Tremont House is a fabulous place on the Strand, the port side historic area of Galveston. If you would like to stoll the shops rather than the beach this is the place. This will be closer to the port as well. There are also some standard hotels but these are the exceptions. Places to eat are Wentletrap, Gaidos and Hill's Pier 19.
MTJSR Posted January 16, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted January 16, 2006 I get one chance to do this right and don't want to make any mistakes. Thanks again!
out2c Posted January 16, 2006 #6 Share Posted January 16, 2006 We are staying at the Harbor House, which is right there next to the pier. Most of the places in Galveston offer the shuttle to the pier. I know the Holiday Inn on Stewart Beach does and so does the newest La Quinta. 13 days and counting... cruzin girl Posted January 16, 2006 #8 Share Posted January 16, 2006 We stayed at the Tremont a couple years ago and I would stay there again no problem. I loved the atmoshere of the older hotel and it was close to everything.
mii Posted January 16, 2006 #9 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Also do a search in the Hotel pre-post forum. There is a wealth of info there. Marilyn
Stevesan Posted January 16, 2006 #10 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Of the hotels suggested so far, The Galvez, Tremont and San Luis are all excellent choices, but they're far from the cheapest (avoid the Flagship like the plague). Harbor House is nearest to the pier. BTW - Galveston is a small city so a taxi wouldn't be costly. Do your own easy shopping at: http://www.galveston.com/ Click on "book a room" and follow instructions (select "Strand and Downtown Area" for closest to Pier, but fewer choices)". You'll find pricing, location and descriptions. Then go to Tripadvisor for guest reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/HACSearch?geo=55879&from=Home&q=Galveston%2C+TX&inMonth=03/2006&inDay=4&outMonth=03/2006&outDay=5&adults=
jdm Posted January 16, 2006 #11 Share Posted January 16, 2006 Stayed pre and post cruise at the Tremont Hotel. Great hotel within walking distance. We walked there after the cruise pulling our luggage. Nice place in the historic district and close to many good seafood restaurants. I highly recommend it. Bichon Dad Posted January 16, 2006 #12 Share Posted January 16, 2006 The Holiday Inn is a good choice, not fancy but moderate price and runs a shuttle to and from the cruise ships.
ehogan Posted January 16, 2006 #13 Share Posted January 16, 2006 We are booked at the Harbor House at Pier 21 and I understand that some say you can walk to the ship. We'll see on Wednesday, I'll report back when we return. I believe we got a rate of $80 a night during the week and $115 for Friday. You can always check opinions of hotels on Tripadvisor.com
crazy4themouse Posted January 16, 2006 #14 Share Posted January 16, 2006 If you go to www.galveston.org, that is galveston.com 's lodging counterpart. There, you can find hotels which have special post- and pre-cruise specials. -gina-
