jeffpcox Posted May 11, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Anyone have any suggestions for a good lunch place in Venice..?? Jeff Cox - Rookie Cruiseer
cactusrose Posted May 11, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Oh my. Almost anywhere. Just follow you nose. It kind of depends on which seciton of town you will be in, but almost any sidewalk cafe will have good food. You will have the added benefit of being able to people watch. If you are headed to the old Jewish Ghetto, you might want to check out Enoteca Due Colonne - 1814C Rio Tera Del Cristo at Calle del Cristo 1952 - Excalibur (freighter) 1972 - Song of Norway, Caribbean 1980 - Hawaii American Curise line, Tahiti 09/01/2002 - Veendam, Alaska 05/29/2003 - Pacific Princess, Alaska 11/26/2003 - Star Princess, Australia/New Zealand 5/28/2004 - Star Princess, Venice to Barcelona 11/06/2004 - Diamond Princess, Mexican Riviera
Chick's pal Posted May 11, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 11, 2004 If money is no object, it is extremely "romantic" to eat at one of the three outdoor cafes right in Piazza San Marco. Otherwise, the best advice I can give you is to walk a couple of blocks away from Piazza San Marco and you will find the prices for food go down considerably. Sorry I can't give you any tips on particular places. I'm sure others will pipe in soon with suggestions, but just in case, you have my limited information. HAVE A FABULOUS TRIP! Bruin Steve Posted May 11, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 11, 2004 Between the Railroad Station and the Ghetto, there is a commercial street...the Lista di Spagna...along this road you will find a number of small cafes, many with outdoor seating, very reasonably priced with fixed price (complete multi-course meal at a set price) menus...Just look for one that smells good...It's really hard to go wrong... You'll get more to eat in larger portions and at a lesser price than anything near San Marco... Mike Andrews Posted May 12, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Hi Jeff, Near the Rialto Bridge on Calle della Madonna off of Fondamenta del vin is the Trattoria all Madonna which specialises in seafood and is superb and not too expensive. AltaJoe Posted May 12, 2004 #6 Share Posted May 12, 2004 I totally agree with Mike. Go to Alla Madonna. From Sam Marco, cross the Rialto bridge and take a left on the other side. Go to the second "street" on your right (the canal is on your left), called Alla Madonna. The Trattoria is about 2 blocks down on your left. It is one of my favorite eateries in the world. No trip to Venice would be complete without a visit. Be sure to try something you wouldn't ordinarily eat, like fried eal, or squid in black ink sauce. You'll be glad you did. Pacific Princess Oct. jeffpcox Posted May 12, 2004 Author #7 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Is this the same place that some people have referred to is Le Madonna or is that a different place too.. Thanks.. Jeff Cox - Rookie Cruiseer ms WesterDam 5/
Mike Andrews Posted May 12, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 12, 2004 Hi Jeff, I would presume they mean Alla Madonna,it's a great place especially for those who like seafood like myself. A few glasses of chilled prosecco in the Cantina do Mori nearby on Sotoportego dei Mori before your meal is another pleasure. Mike
trixie54 Posted May 13, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 13, 2004 Mike or Joe - what other "less adventurous" seafood can we get here? Shrimp? Have some in our group who only want the familiar...I know... thanks!
Flick Posted May 13, 2004 #10 Share Posted May 13, 2004 Another recommendation, albeit a pricey one, is lunch on the terrace next to the Grand Canal at the Pitti Palace hotel. Lots to watch as the traffic is constant on the Canal. The best part was requesting a bowl of raspberries to end the meal and they gave each of us what looked like a mixing bowl of berries. Mike Andrews Posted May 13, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 13, 2004 Hi Trixie, As AltaJoe says, you will get normal seafood fare, including platters of fried mixed seafood etc.. It is not a pretentious place and I am sure you will enjoy it. Mike

Hornblower Posted May 14, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 14, 2004 When in Venice visit the information offices of the APT (Azienda di Promozione Turistica), which you can find at the train station (Santa Lucia), the parking station (Garage Asm) at Piazzale Roma, the parking station at Isola del Tronchetto (an artificial island) and at Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square). There ask for the ‘Venezia a Tavola’ (Appetizing Venice), the official guide to restaurants, typical venues, bars and nightspots. The booklet is free and it is a must if you want to know more about each restaurant, their prices, opening times, etc. At the APT office you can also pick up a free map of Venice. APT can be reached at: Phone +39 0415 298 711 Fax: +39 0415 230 399 For a search of restaurants by locality/food type go to: Venice restaurants Harry’s Bar is excellent, but a little bit on the expensive side. The median cost per person is about Euro75.00-95.00 excluding wine and other beverages. Buon appetito!! Cheers
bdmarine Posted May 14, 2004 #15 Share Posted May 14, 2004 At Harry's stay downstairs and have croquettes or croque mousieurs with a couple of Bellinis or Proseccos. That should keep the price down.
rwdtgb Posted May 14, 2004 #16 Share Posted May 14, 2004 Head across to the isle of Guidecca and go to Harry's Dolce (sister to Harry's Bar)The food was fantastic and you can eat inside or out.The service was top notch. This was one of our favorite places to eat,we have had two lunches there and look forward to eating there in june when we visit Venice again. PS the prices are much less compared to it's big brother Harry's
Aussie Gal Posted May 15, 2004 #17 Share Posted May 15, 2004 Thanks Hornblower, Your knowledge of Venice is amazing. We have been there twice and are returning again in October. The website for the restaurants will be invaluable.
