Booked future HA cruise (Venice to Venice).  HA offers two choices for pre and post hotel packages (both very pricey).  The two choices are (1) Bauer Palazzo and (2)Hotel Bonvecchiati..  Would appreciate any thoughts or recommendations regarding these two choices.

One on the Grand Canal (Bauer) - one of the most historic hotel property locations in Venice, in the Grand Tour old days. One tucked more inside the winding streets and small canals (Bonvecchiati) - both close to San Marco (and the tourists).

Personally, I would pick the Bonevecchiati for the smaller scale of the neighborhood, but it is still in prime, busy tourist area Venice.  Bauer is good because you are closer to the Grand Canal vaporetto stop if you want to move more around the whole city; Bonvecchiati if you want to walk around and  get "lost" in the winding passages. Noise can reverberate in those close stone wall, but the quality hotels do have more sound-proofing. Tough call -both are good but for different reasons.

I used to live in Italy (1970's) and went often to Venice, but that was well before the current tourist crush and cruise ship arrivals. Getting lost in Venice can still happen but you have to head away from Piazza San Marco, to still find the quieter streets and canals. No matter which one you choose, there is still an enduring magic to this city.
