New Yorker .... Getting to the Pier question

CrusinCouple

Recommended Posts

We're sailing Legend 4/23/04 out of NYC. It is my understanding that the QM2 will be there and so will one of the early shows...so I am anticipating LOTS of traffic congestion. Any suggestions on where I should have the cab drop us off?

Thanks!

If you don't mind a bit of a walk, there is a taxi stand by the ferry (from NJ). We actually stayed on the Jersey side, took the ferry over and walked the few blocks. It was fine. I noticed that some cruisers were using this taxi area for loading and unloading...it was out of the way of the big "jam". There is a very nice paved walkway for the few blocks that you have to walk along the water.

You're right traffic can be a nightmare around the pier and since you're sail on a weekday you also have to deal with the normal city traffic. If you can handle you own luggage have the taxi drop you off across the street from the pier. There's a traffic light and a cross walk right to make crossing a little easier. Hope this helps. Enjoy your cruise!

Get yourself some good rolling luggage and practice rolling it on uneven pavement! The NY waterways ferry terminal is a bit of a haul IMHO but doable with good laggage, walking shoes and a not-too-hot day.

The NYC terminal can be a nightmare, Royal Caribbean has fled to a temporary facility in Bayone, NJ.

The New York Waterways Ferry is an excellent choice. Their parking is cheaper than parking at the pier also. A little tip for those taking a cab or being dropped of by a friend or car service. Have them let you off on the uptown side of 12th across the street from the dock you are going to. The downtown traffic going up to the dock can be murder. You can wait quite a while in line. It is MUCH easier from the west side of 12th just walk across the street. No lines!!

I'll be arriving by train and taking a cab...so I think I'll go with walking across the street!

Mee too...although I am a displaced New Yorker the first thing I thought about was being dropped off across the street from the pier. Haven't sailed in over 30 years from NYC, but it was nuts even back then. icon_eek.gif
