2-way radios

We've had pretty good luck w/them, altho, does vary ship-to-ship. Sometimes too many people (i.e. kids) tie up the bands - we usually use 2 or 3 channels as alternates and only use the radios when really needed. Some areas of the ship are too noisey to hear (casino, for example). We always bring them AND the GPS AND our marine 2-way radio. Used that radio one time when at night our ship came to a complete stop - fired up the radio, found the channel from which the Captain was broadcasting and listened to the conversation he was having with a fishing vessel that had run out of gas. That was an interesting "cruise-moment".

I used a pair on the Victory a copule years ago..found them mildly effective.

They're fine if you're on the same deck. They didn't work well when one of us was on the Lido deck and the other in the room (front of ship Deck 7) About the only thing you could make out is a faint 'call/page' noise.

These were Unidens rated for 2 miles

there can be dead zones; however, we've always had pretty good luck and of course, they are handy when going ashore. If you are on your balcony and have a line of sight, those radios will do nicely from the balcony to folks on shore. Not all walkie-talkies work with the same reliability.

Brought them on last 4 cruises. Worked all over the ship for us as well as on land. Very useful with kids and adults alike. Our walkie talkies have the extra bands so you don't have a lot of annoying chatter and squelching back and forth.

There's a lot of different opinions on using them on board the ship. Use your own judgement.

We used the Motorolas. When buying your walkie talkies. 2 mile range-- lots of sub channels But the msot necessity is rechargeable. If you do not get recharable ones-- theyw ill cost a lot of money when going through the batteries.

Also- use them for checking in purposes. People tend to get into screaming matches to get the people to hear them on the other side.

Also-- please turn them off when in the show lounges.

Telephones do have voice mail. make sure you get it set up when you get to the cabin

We use Motorola T5920.

Use the vibrate mode and you won't disturb anyone.

While in Progresso (5 mile pier) we had no problem contacting someone on the 'boat'.

Also worked great when on the Lido having breakfast or a beer and another person was looking for you from their cabin.

When on RCI Explore of the Seas 2 yrs ago we were able to rent phones. Anyone know if they have these for rent on Valor? Leaving in 3 wks and am hoping because their less of a nuisance to others and get better reception throughout ship. Will take my walkie talkies as a back up regardless.

On our first cruise in 2003 we used our motorolas (2 mile range) a bit for the rare times our 11 year old wasn't with us. Worked pretty well too, but we didn't use them much. We carried them when we went ashore also which was nice in crowded shopping areas. We will bring our new ones (7 mile range) this time too - more as a precaution than anything else! They do come in handy.

they rent for 25.00 each-- so for the 50 bucks you will pay to "rent" a pair you can buy a good set for less.

We've used the 'battery' ones in the past, 4 AA's each! It depends on the time of day, how many other people are on your channel, etc. First cruise their was a family on our channel, and they kept paging each other with pre-recorded sounds, one was 'Hiya buddy'. Out of the blue we would here 'Hiya buddy', until we found a channel to ourselves. We still laugh about that one.

Sometimes reception was great-we could hear each other from the Lido deck lounge chairs to our inside cabin on the Empress deck. Other times we couldn't hear each other from the cigar bar on Promenade deck to our cabin on the Empress.

We just bought a pair of good Motorola's, 7 mile range for $70/CDN, so about $60/US? But do be respectful of your fellow cruisers-think about when you would turn off a cell phone, and stick to that plan. ;)
