Southampton in the late 50s

I came across this video, primarily about steam trains in Southampton docks but it also features the 'new' Ocean Terminal.

I remember the Ocean Terminal, berth 44 - directly opposite the new Ocean Terminal (berth 46).

A glorious and exceptionally long two-storey building. Trains ran right inside to deposit passengers alongside their ship..

 

Most impressive was the art-deco seaward end. When the place was demolished mid 1980's there was a big campaign to save that facade & incorporate it into a new terminal, but the place was razed to the ground and the site is now used for cargo and export vehicles.

 

Berth 44 was also Titanic's berth (long before even that terminal building) for her fateful voyage.  Her location is marked by her mooring bollards being painted orange - very easy to see from a ship at the new shed (sorry, at the new "Ocean Terminal"  )

 while Elmdon was the product of It has a remarkable similarity to the old Elmdon terminal building (now listed as grade 2) in Birmingham Airport.

 

I did wonder if they had the same architect, but it was hard to find out. It seems that the Ocean Terminal was designed in-house by the British Transport Commission (parent body of British Railways) while Elmdon was the product of Norman and Dawbarn who also designed the clubhouse at Brooklands and the  BBC Television Centre
