Kauai overnight/early departure

What's the best way to make use of this overnight stop?  We will be in Kauai on July 4 and July 5 (only until 2).  Can you just go to a beach on that second day - is there anything close to the port?  Or should we plan to rent a car or do an organized tour on both days?  I'm also concerned that things will be closed on July 4...

We are doing an airvan tour the second morning, having lunch and going back to the ship. We are renting a car and driving day one. There is a beach within walking distance of the ship, you could spend the day there and have lunch at Duke’s. Another option we considered on day 2 was a morning ship tour to Waimea  Canyon.

The beach within walking distance is Kalapaki Beach Park.  It"s near restaurants and food carts and an ABC store.  Just beyond Kalapaki Beach is the Marriott Kauai Beach Club.  All beaches in Hawaii are public, so you can also use the hotel's beach, just not their lounge chairs, pool,  and such.  The ABC store should have straw beach mats and beach towels and other beach sundries if you need.
