Good Morning

we are sailing on the Caribbean Princess for 2 weeks in December

we are purchasing (2) 4 device surf and stream packages for our group

the question is.....

if we all have cover/WhatsApp I know we can communicate with people home

I want to know if we can call each other while on the ship (using viber/WhatsApp) or can we only use the Princess messenger

Thank you

If your apps are wifi then they'll work.  The person on the other end has to be paying attention however.  LOL  The only glitch I have found is that when the wifi gets thin, slow, and/or glitchy your apps are only going to be as good as the signal at any given time.  However, that is true whether you are onboard or not.

On our Med cruise this summer, we each (7 of us) had WhatsApp on our phones. While on board and using wifi, we were all able to call and text each other without any problems. MedallionNet was not yet activated on the Emerald P.
While on the Regal last month, with Medallion Net, we were again able to use WhatsApp for calls and texts. We were also able to use iMessage because we all had an iPhone.

Did you have to be connected to the Internet to have WhatsApp function for calls and text?

Of course - same as off the ship.  Although to be clear, it also works of course when connected to cellular network service.

The unlimited internet offers all sorts of possibilities to communicate and stay connected if so desired.

Yes, WhatsApp can be used on the MedallionNet only. The only way to communicate on the ship's INTRAnet is with their messaging system. We didn't find that too user friendly because there is no 'alert' to let you know you received a message.
