whitford Posted December 18, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 18, 2019 We are in our late 60's and quite fit. Would like to know your experiences with a self guided tour for Grand Turk. Is it safe? What were you favorite things, secret tips and things to avoid. Really getting tired of the BIG bus excursions. Would prefer to get to know the real culture and people.Any in sites will be quite helpful. Thank
Rare crewsweeper Posted December 20, 2019 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2019 As someone on the cusp of moving out of your age group, may I recommend simply going to the taxi stand and asking drivers if they will do an island tour. Most are very friendly and very proud of their island. To do a tour on your own would require either renting a car, or jeep, or golf cart. You would be given a map (not hard to navigate but you are driving on the left) and that's about it. A taxi tour would give you a very detailed history of the island, show you the lighthouse, the salt works, the original John Glenn capsule memorial, the various sites downtown, a view of the eastern side of the island, perhaps stop at a good local restaurant. Yes you can find these places on your own, but have zero idea of what you are seeing and how it came to be. For lunch, I highly recommend a stop at the Sandbar downtown. Great patio overlooking the ocean and beach. If you are into a bit more "rustic" Edith's Fish Fry at John's Oceanview is a very good stop. There's also a couple of local places on Osborne Road off the Lighthouse Road. And Cool Beans downtown for ice cream. Your driver can recommend places that fit what you are hungry for or your price range.
B and B Rookie Cannucks Posted December 22, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 22, 2019 I’d recommend renting a golf cart . It’s a fun and easy way to explore the island. The island is safe and so small you can’t get lost. We have rented carts 3 times in the past and may do it again this Feb.
cruiseapril Posted January 2, 2020 #4 Share Posted January 2, 2020 We took a taxi in to town- walked around and went to the museum. Then we took another taxi back to the cruise port and got to see much of the small island. The taxi drivers talked about the history. Very inexpensive do it yourself tour!

cruiseapril Posted April 29, 2020 #7 Share Posted April 29, 2020 At the time it was $5 per person each way. Not a tour. Just a taxi.
