When we did this with our children - 2 of them age 7 and 15 at the time. We did the following.

parents ordered two starters each, and shared these, so we all had one starter.

With the mains - one was ordered of the kids menu; three ordered from the normal menu  - we paid for the least expensive option.

Dessert - we ordered 4 as those on the SDP can have 2 of the starters. These are then shared between the family.

In effect we paid for one extra main course only.

nothing was said and the waiters knew what we doing.

Thanks everyone. It seems it may or may not work to have a parent/child dinner date. It had never occurred to me to have all four of us go to the specialty dining. Our kids are 14 and 12, and I did not know about the kids eat free under age 13. I have made 3 reservations for 2 people each. My husband and I will go to the first one (the kids can eat at the buffet) and get a feel for if we think it will work for one of us to go with one of our kids to the next one (the other parent and kid will go to one of the MDRs).
