Volcano Viewing at Night?

Does anyone know if we will be able to get a night view of the volcano from Celebrity Summit? Also, what are our chances of seeing the whales on our March 12-26 cruise to Hawaii? Thanks and Happy Cruising!:)

That mostly depends on what the conditions at the volcano are on that particular day. Most likely what you will see are spots of orange glowing on the side of the mountain. Most likely you will pass at a pretty good distance from the flow. However, if Madam Pele is putting on a show, sometimes the ships come in a bit closer and some of them even turn like they do in the glacier areas in Alaska so both sides of the ship get a view.

Check the conditions at the website for the Hawaii Volcanos Observatory. It also gives you a lot of pictures of the current conditions and what has been going on over the last few years.

I'd say you stand a decent chance of seeing quite a few whales, as they will be here until around the first part of May, and they've finished having the babies by March and are in courtship mode, which usually means more visible and spectacular activities as the males try to get the attention of the females. Keep your cameras in hand at all times!

We just returned from the Summit. From Hilo to Kona (at night) we saw a spectacular view of the lava going into the sea, and also flowing down the mountain in several spots. The viewing started at around 10:00 pm and lasted about 45 minutes. It was really something to see. I am glad that others on this board encouraged me to be on the watch for this, however, the captain announced that we would see this.

Whales: well, we did not see them in abundance, but in Maui we did see several come near the ship and also one great "jump and twist" whale. They were there with babies too. We had an aft cabin, so viewing was easy for us, but many said the top deck was good too.
