Taxi at port of Miami?

Is it hard to get a taxi after a cruise to get back to the airport?

They're plentiful. Cruisers are the cabbies bread & butter. They're always available. There have been reports of cabbies refusing short haul fares from the port to Bayfront Marketplace, Holiday Inn Port, Marriott Bayside etc. The county is cracking down on them. Rules say they must accept all fares. ;)

we where thinking about staying the night before at Holiday inn by the Port. Hope that will not be a problem getting a cab from there to Port

No not at all. They prefer not to drive to the port empty. You'll see plenty of cabs waiting for a fare. ;)

We just stayed there in November and grabbed a cab but the cabbie tried charging us $18  . Had heard on these boards it only ran about $5 so we told him no way and gave him $7 and he hemmed and hawed but then walked away.

Good for you. Always ask the hotel staff before leaving what the rates should be from the hotel to the port. Here's the link to Miami Taxi rates for future reference: http://www.miami-airport.com/html/taxi_and_shuttle_service.html
