My wife and I have passports so we will be fine. We will be traveling with our sons aged 11, 14 and 17. Will a certified birth certificate and school photo ID be enough for them?

The 11 and 14 year old will not need photo ID. If your 17 year old does not drive, you may be able to get a photo ID from your state's motor vehicle department. If the 17 year old is in a public school, then his school ID is valid as a government issued ID. If he attends a private school, then they will not accept it.

I would get them passports as well...Just saves you from any kind of trouble, and are good for any destination...

The 17 year old would be able to get a passport for 10 years instead of 5. But the big question is do you plan on cruising or going anywhere out of the country after next year? If so, it wouldn't hurt to get passports for everybody now. I've heard that prices might be going up as a result of the high demand and added security measures.

I wouldn't let my kids leave the country without a passport.

Go to the DMV and get them each a state identification card, this is what our then under 16 year old boys used until they got a drivers license. This year we finally got passports

If your going to somewhere besides Mexico this year they will need a passport. After 12/31/06 everyone needs a passport to go anywhere pretty much.
