security on the dawn

Just a couple of quick question about getting on and off the ship in ports. Do you have to go through security checks each time? Are they time consuming? I was told by one friend they just want to see your ship card, but then heard that you had to present documents and that it was a more thorough process hence long lines to get back on after a day in port.

On the Dawn last August we never had to wait in line to board the ship after being in port. People come and go all day in port and it is generally a staggered return.

When you reach the ship the only thing that you need to do is show your ship card and have your bags scanned. That's the only security we encountered.

You will show your keycard every time you get off the ship, and every time you get on the ship. Each time it will be swiped through a reader, and your photo will show on the operator's screen. This allows them to verify that you are in fact who you claim to be. Also, your bags will be screened every time you re-enter. When folks have done a lot of shopping, or when multiple excursions are ending close togehter, expect this process to take some time. At times the lines can get extremely long!

Hope this helps.

at some of the ports they want to see some if before they let you back into the dock area. Most of the time its no problem. To get back on the ship you need your key card. They scan it and your picture shows up on their computer and they check it and you on. All passengers then go through a metal detector and bags are screened.

In many ports, especially U.S. and Canadian ones, returning to the ship involves nothing more than scanning your key card (and packages), but a few foreign ports -- St. Petersburg is one notable example -- have a clearance procedure involving their own customs agents at the pier.

However, most commonly, boarding delays are simply a matter of too many passengers returning to the ship at the last minute.

depending on the port...we have always had to show key card, on and off the ship (plus photo ID in Nassau and Canada).

Never a long line;)
