Headed to the Yukom on Holland America- any suggestion to do something special with free time.

You should have two nights in Dawson City.  Parks Canada offers some wonderful small group  walking  tours given by costumed locals.  The performers will take you into some of the preserved buildings and tell stories of the Klondike.  The visitor’s center in Dawson City can tell you what is available.  You can also  independently visit the Robert Service Cabin and the Jack London Museum and an old cemetery up on 8th St.  If the weather is really bad and you want to be inside  there is the Dawson City Museum.  Husky Bus may still run their tour service.  An evening drive up to Midnight Dome is memorable for the views.  For the evening there is Diamond Tooth Gerties gambling hall.  For dinner you may enjoy Klondike Kates at 3rd and King.   The food at the hotel is also good.

Whitehorse is usually a one day stop.  For dinner Klondike Rib and Salmon is near the Westmark Hotel and  is always busy.  There is the North End Gallery nearby which has local artwork and jewelry.  If you come in late in the day it may be closed.  If you fly into Whitehorse you may have time to walk around town to see some of the museums.

Both Whitehorse and Dawson City are on the Yukon river and have very scenic walks along the river.  Whitehorse has the SS Klondike paddle wheeler and the McBride Museum along the waterfront.

Dawson City also was the childhood home of Pierre Berton.  His mother moved to Dawson City to teach school and has written a book about her experiences living in the Klondike for 25 tears,   “I Married the Klondike” by Laura Beatrice Berton.  The Jack London museum is significant in terms of Dick North’s book “Sailor on Snowshoes” in which he tells the adventures of a group who finally found Jack London’s cabin and moved it to Dawson City.

Enjoy your adventure!
