I love New Orleans! I was there for 6 days a couple of years ago for a conference. The only bad thing about the city was that we didn't want to go to class! Too much to see and do that was reasonably priced IMHO. Loved the Aquarium! Ate at the Crescent City Brewhouse on the balcony, had 2 hurricanes at Pat O'Briens, won $69 at Harrah's, took a mule and carriage ride in the Quarter, and generally had a blast. As far as a place to stay pre-cruise, I took some great advice from the board and booked rooms at the Maison St Charles directly through the hotel and got the Bon Voyage Package. $97 per night gets 2 complimentary drinks in the bar, a room, limo service to the cruise terminal, and $5/day parking at the hotel while we're gone. It's a "special event" weekend, so we had to book 2 nights and extend our vacation by one day (I'm soooooooo sad.) The internet price is better, but doesn't include the parking during the cruise. I can't wait!! Thanks for the tip on the Maison St Charles!

We were going to do the city park but many of the things there are closed on friday (our whole day in NOLA) since it will be Oct. 1.

We have done a lot of Aquariums with our daughter but if we can get free tickets it is an idea.

Cotton I printed off the hours for the city park and the Storyland is only open 10 to 1 on that friday and the Carousel Gardens and other rides are not open at all on fridays in Sept and Oct. These were the things I was referring to at the City Park.

I have a question about hotels. We want one that isn't too expensive but as close to the French Market and Bourbon St. as possible. The ones I've been looking at are:

Drury Inn--820 Poydras St

Holiday Inn French Quarter--124 Royal St

Holiday Inn Chateau LeMoyne--301 Rue Dauphine

Dauphine Orleans Hotel--415 Dauphine St

Anyone have any comments on these?

Thanks for your help!

What is a really good steak place? And really good cajun food? We tried Coburns a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it but we are looking to try something new.

Until my FIRST cruise!!

Irishgirl - Last time I was at Gumbo Shop, I saw their seafood platter was $18.95. That's pretty close. I had a friend from L.A. with me, and he thought it was wonderful, as they obviously don't serve a lot of "fried" seafood out there.

Well, after reading all these posts I have officially ordered my good times guide and also the entertainment book. We will be spending 3 days in NO in June and July. We are going down a day before our cruise and then staying 2 days after the cruise so I am hoping to get some good use out of the coupons.

When we get ready to leave I am just going to hand my entertainment book over to someone else (probably walking down the street) and tell then to get some use out of it and when they are done be nice and pass it on to someone else.

Definitely take the 5 year old on the ferry. We spent about 4 days in NO when my kids were 4 and 6 and I think the ferry was their favorite thing.

They love the streetcar too, and that's cheap. Every time we go there they want to ride it.

I've stayed at the Drury Inn a couple of times. It's a great deal for the money; I think it's nicer than lots of places that are priced about the same. And the parking is cheap by NO standards--I laughed for days the first time I stayed there and overheard people complaining about paying $12 to park. Plenty of places charge twice that and it's valet which means you have to stand around and wait for your car and then tip them (and if you're short like me, the six foot valet has adjusted your seat).

I have stayed more expensive places too. Depends on the trip. You can definitely spend a lot of money if you want the extras.

I can also entertain myself for hours just people-watching, and that's free. Parking is the only thing that seems expensive to me, but no more so than in other large cities.

Deafdude, we're getting ready to book our 3rd cruise. this one will be on the Conquest, from New Orleans. I was happy to see the first person to identify themselves as deaf. My husband is and I'm an interpreter. Our first cruise was a deaf awareness cruise a few years back. I checked out your website, great job, unfortunatly only one job posting in Ohio, we'll keep looking. Thanks for the New Orleans info.

Hey Navy Wife! The Maison St. Charles is in the Garden District but just a streetcar ride away from the French Quarter ($1.25 per person.) They have a Bon Voyage package that includes 2 free drinks in their bar, a limo ride to the cruise terminal, and $5.00/night parking for your vehicle while you're gone. I booked for under $100/night. Also, Embassy Suites is near Harrah's Casino. Haven't stayed there, but their rates on the web were under $100/night. Enjoy.

Can't wait to sail on the Conquest 11/14

Hi Nancy, did you check to see if there is an Entertainment Book for your area? My GF and I both have one and we save over $1,000 each every year using it. It's a really good deal since 99% o fthe coupons are 2 for 1. All this talk about seafood platters made us go to Cafe LaSalle at the airport Hilton Saturday night and use our book. we got $18.95 off of our bill with it.

RE: New Orleans Visit - Hotels and Costs

Just got back from N.O, last week. Excellent tourist spot for history, geography, food etc. The prices were normal for a tourist area - cheaper than New York.

Suggestions for hotel - if you wish a quiet, classy hotel - Hampton Inn in the Garden District. A member of the Hilton chain - located on the St. Charles streetcar which is 22 minutes from downtown and French Quarter.
My room was $129 per night - not cheap but worth the elegance of the area and it is located right next door to the Blue Bird Cafe which has the best breakfast in N.O.

The French Quarter is smelly, damp, noisy and I would not stay in a hotel in this area if you wish to sleep at night.

The best meals are now located in the "burbs" where the real authentic creole food is delivered - not downtown nor in the French Quarter. The names escape me right now.

The tours are well priced - but watch out - few of them take VISA, you better have cash$ - most tours are about $15 per person (Cemetary, walking tour of French Quarter, walking tour of Garden district etc)

The steamboat tour right at the waterfront is wonderful - get a glass of wine and sit on the veranda and watch both sides of the Mississippi river.

Had a great time

Enjoy

Ok My answer to a good place for a steak in New Orleans is Dickie Brennan's. We ate there the first night, and than decided to go back the next night, because it was so good. My neighbor went a couple of weeks later and agreed that it was very, very good.

Hi drwestlake. I'm confused about your message about my website. I don't have any job listings on it at all. Are you sure you went to the right site? Here is a link to it. Deaf Dude's Deaf Links I try and plan a deaf group cruise each year. if you and your husband are interested in interpreting on a cruise, send email to KStrawderman@carnival.com and see if she can put you on her list. Carnival is getting better about providing interpreters for the deaf than they have in the past. You can get a free cruise in exchange for a few hours of interpreting each day. I have been on the Conquest twice with deaf groups. our last group was small and was part of the conquestadors group from here on Cruise Critic. to see pics of all of our deaf cruises check these links

Thanks for all the great information! We're on the Conquest July 4th and are spending three nights in NO prior to the cruise.
Any good reasonably priced restaurants to take a 15-y/o to?
