I'd not recommend.

I'd even be very wary of an independent solo visit for a male.

If from a cruise ship it's a long drive from Port Said or Alex. or Port Sokhna, and I wouldn't even recommend a private tour - stick to ship's police-escorted coach convoys. Choose a tour that includes the pyramids and sphynx at Giza. And the new Grand Egyptian Museum is in the same location, altho it's opening date has been put back a couple of times - if not open by then most of the artefacts will still be at the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (aka The Egyptian Museum) in Cairo.

If on a land vacation I'd strongly recommend choosing a westernised hotel (they're usually very acceptable & inexpensive), and using a tour operator for day excursions - there are a number to choose from that are used to western tourists.

But if you're considering a week and some, unless you're heavily into museum exhibits (worth a week or more for an aficionado) you'd do much better to split your time between Cairo and Luxor - even though they're an hour's flight time apart. And if I had to choose just one, it'd be Luxor. Much safer, more laid-back, generally reasonably up-market (but not expensive), and far more sights.

Back to cruise ships - the port for Luxor is Safaga. Again a long drive (3hrs e/w) to Luxor, again use ship's tour, a long but well-filled day.

Last visit was several years ago, some things will of course have changed

I went to Cairo, solo, in 2017...for one day!  I was on a Uniworld tour and I arrived two days before.  I was greeted at the airport by Uniworld and I told them that I intended to take a taxi to the museum (on Tahrir square), to spend  the next day.  They were insistant that I should NOT do that.  They took me to the museum and picked me up at an appointed tiime, but I did spend  four hours wandering the museum alone.  I think that was safe, but if you want to travel alone, arrange for a guide and driver.  They are really inexpensive and it will be more safe.
