Insurance for Cruise only or Cruise plus additional touring on our own

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into getting trip insurance for our upcoming trip to Europe in October.  We will be boarding the cruise on Oct 20 in Venice, but we will be doing our own touring of Barcelona and Venice prior to the cruise.  The arrangements for Barcelona and Venice are with AirBnb and we are able to cancel with no penalty up to 24 hours in advance.  My question is should I get insurance for the parts of the trip that we are doing on our own prior to the cruise as well as the cruise itself?

I am also interested in this topic. We are doing a cruise to Antarctica but plan to go to Buenos Aires for a few days after the cruise is completed. We have insurance for the cruise, but per the insurance company it wouldn't cover the extension on our own, it just covers cruise and plane portions. Any advice?

Hi Stu52,

Sorry about the delay answering you.

Depending on your per person prepaid, non-refundable trip costs, you might be able to include these costs in your coverage without paying any extra money.

If you want specific advice that pertains just to you, neither CruiseCritic nor myself want you to put any personally identifiable or private information in a public forum. You may email me at steve@tripinsurancestore.com or call me at 1-888-407-3854 and I will help you.

I'm happy to help you, but I need to find out more information to give you the right advice. May I get the following?
- What are your current ages?
- What are your travel dates?
- What's your full per person prepaid non-refundable trip cost including airfare, if any (not an average)?
- When did / will you pay the first payment on your trip?
- How much was your deposit per person?
- When is your Final Payment due?
- If you didn't take this trip, would you likely re-use your airfare for a different trip?
- Was any of your deposit paid with Future Travel or Cruise Credits that represented money you had paid on a trip that was cancelled or interrupted due to Covid?

- Do either of you, any traveling companions or your non-traveling family members, have or recently had any medical conditions, or had any medication changes for a medical condition, that could worsen and, in turn, cause you to cancel or interrupt your trip? Or that could cause you to seek treatment on your trip?
