labyrinthgal Posted February 24, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2006 Let's see ... Princess cruise first week of July ... we would like recommendations for excursion operators outside of Princess. Some excursions we are considering: Ketchikan -- misty fjords (by boat, maybe plane), bear watching, and I'll admit it I want to see the lumberjack show ... Juneau -- salmon fishing Skagway -- From what I read the town is pretty neat, is it worth just walking around and exploring for the day and not doing any excursions? thanks! dyeadave Posted February 25, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 25, 2006 Get thee hither to the National Park Service when you arrive first thing and get the unbiased low down on things to do as well as things not to do, depending on weather, etc., while in Skagway. Budget Queen Posted February 25, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 25, 2006 In Skagway, the Park Service visitor center is just excellent- http://www.nps.gov/klgo/schedule.htm You are early for most bear viewing except Anan out of Ketchikan. Otherwise Misty Fjords flightseeing is my top pick. http://www.islandwings.com http://www.southeastaviation.com Juneau- research venders for fishing http://www.traveljuneau.com
sk84fungirl Posted February 25, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 25, 2006 From the research I've done, it appears as thought the White Pass railway is something I want to do in Skagway. I'm still researching and curious to get feedback on whether to go the visitor's center first or purchase this through the cruise line. I'm going in June. dyeadave Posted February 25, 2006 #6 Share Posted February 25, 2006 A minimum ten dollars extra will get you picked up at the ship. The ship is about three blocks from the train station. The Park Service is the old restored train station on the end of the station complex. You can even catch a bus for that three blocks, for a buck fifty. The first stop for the bus is right at the train station. The Parkies will give you a straight answer about the fog in the valley at that moment! [something you won't get from the tour hawkers!] There is always room on the train! You work it out!?! Thanks for visiting our town. DD
