Unless they got drunk and had not idea how much they actually drank.  And in that case, paying in cash would not have helped, except they probably not remembered what the paid in cash.

 

Yes, you have to pay attention to the slip you sign.

Both of those are the fault of the person signing the slip.

 

And likely, if they had paid cash, they would have just paid what was asked and never realized that they paid extra.
