After the beautiful sail away (so much to see leaving Port of Miami) we did a quick change and put in for our Anytime Dining table.  App said 30-4O minutes but it was less than 20.

The dining room, the Empire Dining Room, had Anytime on 3 and Set time dining was on 2.  However we were escorted to 2 and were told that there was lots of demand at that time for Anytime so they were also using downstairs.  We appreciated the shorter wait!

Food was delicious, quick and hot. Excellent serving staff, including Marcus.  For starters had 2 each—both cured salmon and then I had shrimp cocktail and Grilled Salmon Russ had Cslamari and Beef Briskrt.  We both got the no sugar strawberry cream.  So good!  Photos and more info to follow after the Welcome Aboard show!

Back from our after dinner entertainment!  Heard the band’s first after-dinner setg in the Red Frog Pub (classic Rock music; quite good!), then attended the Welcome Aboard Party and finally Manny Acosta’s 10:30 show (the R rated one) in the Punchliner Comedy Lounge.

The ship does not feel crowded at all. Don’t know if its just the first night and everyone is exhausted, but the Red Frog Pub had plenty of room, there was no line//trouble to get a seat at the main stage for the Welcome show (we did come in early during Bingo and watched the end of that, but there were seats available right up until show time) and again, no line or trouble getting into the 10:30 Punchliner show,

As for the Welcome show, Adam our cruise director has a ton of energy.  Backtracking a bit to the Sail Away Party...I wasn’t a fan of how it was done on the Spirit. On the Mardi gras, the cruise director and the Fun Team stay in front and show the dance steps and leave lots of room for the cruisers to dance behind them. Here, about 8 fun team members just took up the entire middle part of the dance floor...don’t know if they didn’t expect anyone to want to dance so they wanted it to look crowded/fun OR if people didn’t dance because there was really no place to dance but off to the side (where we were). Hope the Deck Parties are a little different.

OK back to the Welcome Show. There was a game where 2 couples competed to knock tennis balls out of a box on their butt (I’m not making this up); they got nice prizes including reserved center seats for all the remaining shows, champagne, wine, ship on a stick, etc.  Playlist Productions (they did some numbers for us).  was much more like what I’m used to on Carnival...a cast of 8 who both sing and dance, with canned music.  I’m not going to do a critique of them here (I don’t want to put on my reviewer hat as someone who was on the Board of Directors of a theater for years, as well as performed myself)...I understand that this is a relatively new group of entertainers here on the ship so they are probably still getting it together.  I think I’ll miss the overall production values and level of costumes//backdrops and the live music I had on Mardi Gras in February.

We enjoyed Manny;s show (yes, definitely R rated!)

A note about Bingo which we sat in on the end. Wow. On Mardi Gras, hundreds of people played Bingo. It might be that this was the first night and lots was going on, but I think maybe 40 people played? So prizes were smaller, but lots easier to win. First prize was $125, second game it was $150 and last game $300.

Photos of the evening, dinner first (which ended with a spectacular view of the sunset!):

Final photos of various entertainment tonight—people dancing to band in the Red Frog Pub, Easter Bingo, Punchliner. Also some of the very Egyptian details of the main theater, which is called Pharaoh’s Palace (but why? WHY is the Spirit Egyptian themed? It’s so random for a cruise ship! I have to assume this is a Farcus designed ship—I do enjoy his over-the-top designs, just can’t imagine sitting down at a Carnival Board meeting and deciding that an Egyptian themed ship is what is needed to sail the seas! Oops, I digress...) Photos:

Good morning!

We woke up early for Stretch and yoga.  Our Wake Up (card on door night before) coffee came at end of the 1/2 hour window with a bagel and cream cheese to share.  So we gulped it down.  Lukewarm coffee AND not enough cream cheese for 1/2 the bagel (supply issues?)

We got to the Stretch class at 8:02 and with 8 socially distant people it was full.  Change of plans, hubby conducted stretch session up in room.  We also ditched plans for  the yoga class AND possible fitness pass purchase for cruise.  Don’t want to spend $$ to fight for spaces in that small room.  We will track walk, dance, and do our own YOGA.

The app time is messed up from ship time so all is confusing this morning—we all went back in time 1 hour last night and the app didn’t.  There was an announcement and they are trying to fix it.

At SeaDay Brunch now—no wait at opening time!

Sea Day Brunch details!  Yes the steak in the steak and eggs isn’t the same cut of meat as before, but it was tender and tasty, according to Russ.  The Frittata was HUGE compared to the one I had on Mardi Gras; fewer potatoes, but that was OK with me. Coffee was hot at breakfast!

The juices, as always ,delicious ,and worth the $5 for me (I never feel like I get enough vegetables ona. cruise; your results may vary!).

After breakfast/brunch we used the very nice walking track up on deck 10 and did about 5,000 steps

I’m just chilling on my balcony right now; beautiful weather, not too hot. Internet is working (its been very in and out). I also have an ATT cruise package with Cellular at Sea and for some reason overnight my phone dropped the ship connection and picked up one in Cuba (Cuba is NOT an included Caribbean island in the plan). I have an Cellular Data turned off on my phone, but just FYI in case you DO have the Data plan, that could be very expensive.

We are going to do the cooking demonstration at the steak house then the 50s dance. I’m going to attend the Photography Class (part of the Journeys lecture series) this afternoon. Past that, plans not made...perhaps resting on a lounge chair by one of the pools!

Instead of Cooking Demo we decided we wanted Sushi for lunch and went to Bonsai Sushi instead. We are already eating too much this trip and its only Day 2! We had the Ship for 2 which was miso soup, side salad, banb banb bonsai roll, california roll and 6 pieces of sushi (tuna, salmon & 2 shrimp), Good value —$24 (just a roll back home costs $12). We finished it off with green tea matcha cupcakes (2 perfectly sized tasting cupcakes for $3; filled with lemon cream).  No alcohol...after my Fun Ship, glass of Chardonnay at dinner and then Red’s Painkiller at the Red Frog Pub, I’m done with drinking for a bit).

The 50s Dance Class was lots of fun!  Good attendance (held in the atrium) and we had lots of the Playlist cast there to show us the steps and dance with us. And Russ and I signed up to be in the show at the end of the cruise (ha...bet you would have guessed that we might have...we ARE a little crazy!).

We met Marietta and Ron after the class...they said hello since they were following along the LIVE—Marietta and Ron. By the way Bethany and Brianna, your parents say hello!

Currently we are sitting in  “The Jungle” this delightfully quiet sitting area on Deck 3 by the windows). We are going to go to HIgh Tea at 3PM (Yes, they are having it on this cruise!!) and I’ll skip out early to head to the Photography Class.

Also a note from yesterday...I found out that 2 couples who were refused boarding at the pier due to the COVID protocols did NOT get their luggage back...so their luggage is traveling to Seattle without them.  So my nervousness in the other thread about Carnival’s language “if denied boarding we’ll TRY to retrieve your luggage” was well warranted.

I am taking the Spirit from Seattle back to Miami in September. I am following your musings in reverse.

I am sure there is an Egyptian theme because a lot, a lot of people are fascinated with Egypt.

I am not sure how Russ plowed through that huge piece of steak, and the five fries. I may be forced to go early to the Sea Day Brunch, and again just before they close.

Good to know that the Cubano's are grabbing cell phones that float by and rachet their bills. That is one of the ways they earn hard currency.

Awesome! I wasn’t sure if they were going to take Spirt back to Australia or not; cool that you’ll be on the reverse Panama Canal trip! Spirit doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the newer ships, but she is a beautiful ship with a great crew!

LOL on the size of the SeaDay Brunch. It’s OK with us; we like smaller portions so we can try different things. Although my husband DID eye the breakfast burritos when we went by Blue Iguqna’s, and unexpectedly decided we’d have Sushi for lunch.

And yea; it was a bit surprising to see my phone connected to Cuba; we weren’t even that close. I have the Cellular at Sea since we have two 88 year old Moms at home, and want a phone connection in case of emergency. First there was interference and I couldn’t connect to Cellular at Sea (last night) after having a great connection earlier; then when I woke up I saw the Cuban network connection.

High Teas was fantastic!  We all filed in pretty quickly; not a huge group.

The violin trio played (well, duo since we boarded although they are billed as a trio) , don’t know if the third has COVID or missed the ship.

And so many tasty treats! If you are in it for the tea sandwiches; meh; we got 1 piece of an OK cucumber sandwich. But the sweet treats!! There were scones with cream! Tarts with chocolate fudge and fruit! Mini peach crumbles! Cakes!  I limited myself to the scone with cream and the tart, and both were excellent, and Russ also tried the peach cobbler. Cakes were a bridge too far for us.  Tea selection was basic (Lipton or Green Tea) unless you ponied up $1.95 for the more exotic selection (or have CHEERS). Scones are not the traditional ones where you put on your own clotted cream and jelly but given the need for quick service, these were fine and also very good.

Just a lovely tea with quick and friendly service!

Photography course was a bust (for me).  Teacher was an older gentleman who talked quite a bit about his background and experiences, and then gave out very basic information on how to operate your iPhone camera. I was expecting more of a secret tricks and tips type of thing, but literally at one point he was talking about how to operate the video button. Perhaps good for beginners or those that like the folksy sort of teaching style.

Dinner tonight was not as planned.

We went to Manny Acosta’s 5:30 PG show. We enjoy his comedy; very observational and talks to//incorporates the audience (we were in line of fire tonight!).

Right at the end of the show at 6pm we immediately put in for dinner (hoping to eat at about 7 the latest, even with a wait). . Well, the Anytime Dining wait for a table showed 120 to 130 minutes before we could get at table!  (So, 8pm or later). We decided that was WAY too long of a wait (although we hoped that it might go quicker, no guarantees) so we decided to just get dinner at the buffet instead.

This wasn’t a tragedy as we enjoyed our dinner BUT, and this is a big but, Carnival is allowing way too many people to have Any Time dining if there is EVER an expected wait that long. I’d rather be told when booking the cruise NO, sold out, please pick set time dining.  Now we are paranoid that we’ll have trouble getting a table//timing things the rest of the cruise.

We were not the only ones in this boat. LONG line upstairs at the buffet, and pretty much everyone on line said they had tried to book a table for dinner and didn’t want to wait 2 hours.

As for the buffet, on the plus side they had items from the MDR menu from the night including the Leg of Lamb (very very good; medium rare, carved at buffet) and the sugar free panna cotta for desert (very good!). Other main items included baked ziti, pork chops, butter chicken etc. Desserts included strawberry cheese cake, apple crumble with vanilla sauce, and cappuccino mousse. On the minus side, I never find the buffet food to be TRULY hot. Also no one ever came and asked us if wanted anything to drink.

Keep your fingers crossed; I think tomorrow our dinner strategy will be to put in for a table right when MDR opens OR we’ll just plan to eat really late.

Since we ended up eating dinner very early (and quickly) at the buffet. we caught the 88 Keys pre show at 7 and 88 keys main show at 7:30.

The 88 keys show was the piano player from the piano bar, Rawles. He was amazing! Very talented singer, great vibe; we are totally going to be denizens of the piano bar on this cruise.

Tonight was the opening night for 88 Keys for the Spirit’s Playlist Productions cast.  I thought they did a great job; they had great energy tonight and looked like they were having a ton of fun on the stage. The managing director of my theater always said if the actors are having fun on stage, the audience will too, and that was true tonight.  My one pet peeve from the show...after Rawles played piano and did it so well, the show opened with singer Brian fake piano playing to actual singing of Billy Joel’s Music Man. Yikes, Carnival, rub it in that the production shows on the ship have canned music instead of live!

The show featured songs by Billy Joel, Elton John, Journey, some 50s numbers. Eclectic, but all sort of worked together. No story, just singing and dancing.

We briefly stopped by the “Motown and 70s Trivia Dance Party” on Lido Deck, and are go ing to get some late night Pizza cause...well, today has been a total loss of the idea of healthy eating, so why not go with the flow?

Just a couple of photos tonight; of piano player Rawles and the set for 88 Keys, a brief video of part of the main 88 Keys show (if it loads), and the mountains of Cuba which we passed late this afternoon. And our first towel animal, a sting ray.

We got to the MDR early and made a reservation through the app as soon as we were able (about 5:20). There was a loooooong line outside the 3rd floor entrance by 5:30. No one cared about the line and there were a bunch of people trying to claw their way to the front. The employees did nothing to help; it was kind of annoying.

After dinner, we checked the app and saw that there was a whopping 80min wait to get back into the MDR! We can't believe you saw wait times of over 2 hours!

We will continue to have dinner as soon as MDR opens to keep our wait times reasonable. I'm sorry you had a bad dining experience tonight! What an unfortunate side effect of cruising on a smaller ship....

Tonight was better. Not perfect, but better. We put in for a table at 5:26 and the app said 10 minutes! Exciting, right? We waited 50 minutes (the app kept telling us 10 minute wait the whole time). At this point, we came to the dining room and politely asked what the actual wait time might be (so we could do something else while waiting). We were seated right away, and the rest of the meal was delicous, hot, and served quickly (in and out within an hour).

Internet today on the Spirit has been either excruciatingly slow or not available, especially around sail away time, when we got back on the ship after our time in Jamaica. It is still really, really slow.  I’ll give a brief outline of how today went, and then fill in with more details and photos tomorrow on our Sea Day—Wi Fi willing—or later tonight if I make it to when everyone has gone to bed and the Internet works.  The Wi-Fi is SO frustrating on this ship. I payed for a premium plan, and most of the time it takes forever to upload a simple photo or a very short video, much less stream anything as advertised.  Even getting Cruise Critic or many web sites to load is extremely difficult.

We had a great day today; lots of fun and we did a ton!

Here is the basics of what we did today...I’ll fill in with photos and some observations tomorrow. Sorry for the length; I would have done this whole thing in more “LIVE” bits if I had been able.

We had our first breakfast on the Lido. Sigh. Nothing was hot. Ice cold eggs benedict and hash browns were attempted. Twice.  I didn’t have time to get a made-to-order omelette (my fault).  I did, however, have a fantastic chocolate chip muffin and some good fruit (melon, orange slices). Tomorrow we’ll have breakfast in the MDR.

We docked in Jamaica at 9am. Our shore excursion, Jamaica Tour and Bamboo Beach Break (err....something like that, if I had functioning Internet I’d give the exact name) left from the white tent at the end of the pier at 9:30. Easy to find. Small group in a nice small bus//large van of about 13 passengers. Our tour guide Alliyah was great;  it was a pretty basic bus tour with minimal stopping and then the sort of shorter beach experience we were looking for. There were some issues with the food and beverage charges on the beach (more on this later) but the Jerk Chicken and other food was quite good.

It POURED rain on our way back to the ship. By the time I was waiting to walk back to the ship, we are talking Biblical Deluge. Waited about 20 minutes, didn’t give up, then we RAN.  I didn’t know I could still run like that. Still ended up soaking wet like I had gone into the shower fully clothed.

Lazy late afternoon watching the rain and thunder showers at the Occho Rios port. Read a book since I couldn’t get online. Took photos.

You can read about our MDR app reservations debacle in the above post. While we waited we listened to the violin trio that is still a duo in the atrium.

Dinner itself was excellent. I’d say that my main course, Roasted Duckling (came with asparagus, broccoli, red cabbage and carrot and apple mash) was superb; one of the best non-extra pay meals I’ve had on a large cruise line. Really good. Hubby had the vegetarian Indian selection which he enjoyed (bit salty). We both had what we thought would be a red velvet cake with cream cheese ice cream for desert...it was actually a parfait cup with cream cheese cream and a bit of red velvet cake like thing. Not what it sounded like on the menu!

After dinner we snuck in right after the beginning of Mark Bennick’s show. He’s a magician. I hate magicians...but I’ll go cause hubby likes ‘em). I was pleasantly surprised; the guy was really funny (sarcastic humor, just FYI if that isn’t your style). Also if you want a magician who pulls rabbits out of hats and saws ladies in half, not your guy (he does more card tricks//mind reading sorts of things).

Then we went to hear Rawle in the piano bar! He is excellent; plus great crowd, lots of singing along. It was packed but we were able to find a seat at the bar coming just 10 minutes before he started. Henry the bartender there is REALLY good; made me an excellent lemon drop martini. Hubby (who doesn’t drink) was able to get a Coors Edge Non-Alcoholic drink there. We sang along with everyone else and had a great time!

Back at the room! I’m going to hit SEND on this (my fingers are crossed). I tried to add a photo or two but the upload is taking forever; so tomorrow for that it is.

Thanks for reading along; hope you are finding useful information and also enjoying the trip!

Mr Heald, on book of faces, brought up someone on board had complained to him about the wait times you guys are having..

A lot of support about Anytime dining all the time, with Carnival should happen. plus not so many on 2nd seating of your cruise around 150. While most are anytime.

Some people brought up that there are so many Diamond & Platniums taking up anytime, so that's why delays..

Really not acceptable....

Thanks for that info! I agree...and I wish Carnival had sent me an eMail prior to the cruise saying “hey; great that you want Anytime Dining, but we have too many people wanting that this journey, would you mind moving to late dining?“  We would not have minded (and are are going to try dining MUCH later tonight so hopefully that will help...might even see if we can join set time late dining for the rest of the cruise.

Well, the Internet is still painfully shlow but it is slightly better than last night so I think I can get some posts and photos up!

Started our day off right with breakfast in the MDR at around 8:30. Wait was less than 10 minutes. Good coffee, fast service. I had melon and the avacado toast (really nice with 2 poached eggs!)  and hubby had a yogour parfait, and the breakfast bowl (the healthy one with veggies, feta cheese and 2 eggs...hopefully the photos will add so you can see), plus he added some pork sausage since that was too healthy!

From breakfast, we tried the WiFi again and completely failed to get anything done, so gave up and went to our dance rehearsal for the 50s number at the end of the trip!

Woo! Breakfast photos uploaded!!

OK...as mentioned...then we had our rehearsal for the Journeys 1950s show. Evidently this is a show they do at the end of Journeys cruises with the performers, staff and crew!

We got a letter from Crystal (the Playlists Cast Manager) giving us our rehearsal times (there are 3 on sea days with another to be added.  We were a little like UH OH, WHAT DID WE GET OURSELVES INTO? When we showed up and realized it was a private rehearsal with a group of the Playlist cast! But it was a TON of fun...lots of fun steps, they are great teachers and we are glad we are doing this! If you are reading this on the ship and like to dance at all,  they are looking for some more couples you should TOTALLY do it (contact Crystal).

After that we met the nice older couple that will be teaching ballroom dancing classes on the ship...they are going to teach swing, foxtrot, waltz, cha cha, merengue...you name it, long cruise) we were a bit tuckered out from our morning dancing so didn’t join in.

Instead we attended the Cartagena port talk. Cruise Director Adam billed it as a “shopping talk” so we almost didn’t go; instead it was a lovely question and answer that did cover shopping a bit (emeralds) but also gave really great information about how to get around the port, etc (and also touched on some of the ports coming up). I miss the little papers we used to get with port information the night before a port, so this was super helpful.  Things we learned from the talk included that there is a lovely sail-in to  Cartagena tomorrow so if we want to see it, be on deck at about 6:30. Also that it is a SHORT early port day...7am to 2:30pm. We have an excursion at 8:45, but evidently there are some coffee shops right by the port so we will have our morning coffee in Columbia! Also learned that taxi to center of historic part of town is $20 each way, and there is also a Emerald (don’t have full title) bus that is $15 each way.  And yes, emeralds are the big shopping item in Cartagena (which we shall not partake in).

We were then ready to move some more so did a few laps on the walking track (sunny, nice wind, beautiful).

For lunch we split a Blue Iguana burrito at the Lido deck (after my food bender yesterday we are pacing ourselves..tonight is Formal Night, and my fav Formal Night menu with fried oysters, lobster tails and prime rib!). Lots of room to hang on the Lido deck so far this cruise!

And now after a quick rest, time to try my luck at the casino!

Couple more photos; after casino time I’ll try to add the ones from yesterday.  The first photo is the crafting class that we passed..they have a whole crafting room and do different projects all trip (for a fee, I believe, I will check that out). Last photo is of the nice little sheep that Herry, our excellent room steward, had waiting for us when we got back to the room.
