British passport date

We are sailing from Southampton to Norway on Saturday.

Last week, I found out my friend was denied boarding on a Ryan air flight to Spain as her passport was a 10 years 9 months issued one. She was told to forget the extension and just look at the 10 years. I've just seen another news story on it.

Government guidelines are..

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

Mine was issued June 2012 and expires March 2023.

I spent all last week trying to get an emergency appointment or delivery slot but there were none.

Celebrity have told me that as long as it has 6 months left on it, I should be OK.

Between this and the covid tests (including the one at port for our daughter) I've never been less excited about a holiday.

So my question is, has anyone else travelled with celebrity on an extended passport recently?

I thought that it was the EU that brought the rule in. As Norway is not a member then you could possibly be ok?

Maybe send Celebrity (captains club) a FB message and get something in writing?

These aren't Celebrity's rules but the country you are visiting. Check with the Norwegian Authorities.

It was always the "law" it's just that when we were in the EU it was "ignored" now we are out it's enforced.

This seems to depend on the person at checkin/bagdrop at the airport - from watching the local news on TV last night, and an overly strict interpretation of the rules. If Celebrity say it's okay, you should be fine. At Norway, no one will check passports so you will be fine.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday!

I emailed the Norwegian embassy last week too and haven't had a reply. I'll have another look to see if there's anyone else I can check with.

Try phoning the Embassy or the Norwegian Tourist Office might be able to give you a direct number for the Embassy.

Did you book through a travel agent, we were told by our T/agent that passports like yours are no longer valid for Canaries. Your travel agent will have taken details and should be able to advise you

Booked with celebrity direct. We are only going to Norway.

I have spoken to the man we've booked with and all he's said is 'it needs 6 months on it' which I have.

From what I'm reading online, it's airlines and Spain that are the issue.

Sorry to press this point. Celebrity's and all other travel organisations booking conditions are very clear ( I speak from over 50 years experience working in the travel industry and  I still handle  customer complaints  for a specialist UK based Tour Operator) the responsibility for having the correct documentation is entirely that of the passenger. If you are refused boarding X will not refund you and nor will your tavel insurance. The only ways to be certain are either to get a new passport or written confirmation from the Norwegian Authorities.

That's what I've been referring to in all of my heartache. It was issued June 2012 so is less than 10 years old before sailing.

I have tried to get a new passport but there are no appointments.

See below from UK Government website advising on entry requirements to Norway.

Id say you’d best get a new passport!

Sorry, you are right.

You meet both conditions (passport issued less than 10 years ago & passport in date more than 3 months after you are due back), therefore there should be no issue.

Also, doesn't your cruise end before 10 years is up?

Enjoy your cruise 🙂

It does. If I was in my '9 months extension' I'd be begging to rearrange.

I've also found in the e documents a line that says the passport needs to be 6 months in date. Nothing about not travelling on the extension part.

The advice from the government site is so vague and social media hasn't helped me when I'm reading about people being denied flights. If only I'd seen that months ago, not 10 days before.

Now to get through the covid tests and thank you.

Your passport is only valid for 10 years from date of issue

If it was issued on 10 June 2012 it expires on 9 June 2022. It must also have 3 months validity left after the date you are due back.

Have you tried my earlier suggestions to get a telephone contact at the Norwegian Embassy. SAS the Norwegian Airline may also be able to give you a number.

This is not quite correct. The the OPs case, they would need to enter by 9 June, but they could stay until 9 December and their passport would still be valid (3 months validity at date they would return back).

That's the whole point. Passports cannot be valid more than 10 years. All the time we were in the EU they accepted the UK adding on the extra months (no other country does this) but now they can apply the rules correctly. The issue in this case is will the Norwegian authorities allow the person to enter Norway or not. If they will no problem if not she needs a new passport.

The options are reducing:

1) a new passport - that seems impossible now.

2) get something from the Norwegian authorities that says you can travel.

3) just turn up at Southamton and  hope. If they are refused the people with the correct papers could travel or everyone cancels. At this point neither Celebrity nor the travel insurance company would have any obligation to refund.

4 ) cancel tomorrow (Wednesday) this is the last day under the Cruise with Confidence rules without explaining why. Rebook for the following week or later and use the time to get a new passport.

Finally the option no one wants. Hope one of the party tests positive for Covid which would at least get you a refund

Hello,

This topic was covered on BBC Breakfast this morning, Weds 27th April.

A table was shown on the screen re the '10 years and no more' and this was attributed to the EU and no individual country. I don't know if there is the possibility to view a repeat 'on-line' but it might be informative.

I think what the cruises lines are doing is going for 'the HIGHEST common denominator' and applying the gold plated copper bottomed requirements to everything/everywhere whether needed or not.

Regards,

Cublet

It is worth noting that Norway is not part of the EU - but is part of Schengen so rules do vary.

My OH has just had his passport renewed and it took a little over 3 weeks. He applied online (including uploading a photo we took at home against a plain blank wall) on 7 April. The old passport was sent registered on 9 April. His new passport arrived on 25 April. The old one hasn't arrived back yet. We were able to track the whole thing online too.

Not much help to the OP, but it does give some idea of current timescales.
