Trip Delay coverage limits

The critical coverage to protect from post cruise forced isolation varies greatly by company and policy.   Most cap out at max $200 per day and or $1,000 per claim per person.  If you require 10 days isolation this coverage is weak and not sufficient.  Most European cities are going to charge much higher rates for Covid isolation.  Looking for higher trip delay coverage but don’t want to sell body parts to get it.  Any experiences on isolation costs in Rome appreciated as well as higher levels of Trip Delay insurance.

IMG LX covers $250 per person per day with a cap of $2,500 per person.

Trawick offers options to upgrade trip delay for an additional premium, but note that the provision also covers return transportation as opposed to other policies that cover transportation under trip interruption. What looks like more coverage with Trawick may not prove to be so. Do some hypothetical math.

Also look for a policy that extends coverage so that it does not end if you are delayed by a positive test at disembarkation and thereby prevented from returning home by your scheduled date.

Hi CK57,

I look at last minute hotel rates every day as I'm talking to people who are asking about the quarantine coverage and the prices are a lot less that they assumed. In addition, many hotels give special rates to their existing guests if they have to be quarantined.

I had a bad experience with Trawick a few years ago and won't use them again.  It took 6 months of back and forth for them to pay a routine claim when my husband got sick on a cruise and we had to come home early.  A less persistent person would've been out of luck.

Thanks. Personal experience with a claim is always a useful measure for anyone who may be considering the policy because of otherwise attractive features. The Trawick trip interruption is not necessarily more generous nor does it offer an extension. Poor claims service is a third strike against it.

  • 2 weeks later...

In researching the travel insurance offered to us for the cruise ended the day the cruise ended, and did not start until the cruise began.  Thus the day we were to arrive before the cruise, and two days post cruise which we intended to stay would not have provided us any insurance.  The travel agent was under the belief that those days were covered.  I read the fine print in the policy and called the insurance company twice, speaking to two different agents, that they would not extend the policy in either direction.  Our airfare was purchased direct and not a part of the package from the travel agent.  Fortunately, we found a complete policy, and was actually several hundred dollars less, and had higher medical coverage as well.  Word of caution, just because your travel agent says your covered, investigate and read the fine print.

A "travel agent" is not an insurance specialist.

It's just as important to check what coverage one is buying (and at what price) for travel insurance as it is for car insurance or homeowner's insurance.  Policies are not all alike.

It sounds like you found a good policy before it was needed!

Some people (including some who post here on CC) are not so lucky....

Our travel insurance covers us starting the moment we leave home.  In fact, it covers us BEFORE we leave home, if there is some covered event that prevents us from traveling.

That is not unusual for cruise line insurance, but third-party coverage begins on the scheduled day of departure. Not all extend beyond the scheduled return date. That is why a policy with an extension is important.

Cancellation coverage begins usually the day after the company receives your payment. All other coverage takes effect once travel begins. See the policy for specific language.

Which insurance did you purchase?

I went through AARDY to view a number of policies and found the AIG Plus policy the best fit for our travels.  AIG offers many policies, and this policy did not show up on the AIG site, but on AARDY we could compare this policy to many others to get a good view of the terms and coverage details.
