Not sure about Gatwick, at Birmingham it’s pretty much as you have described it but we don’t scan our passport at the self serve bag drop just the boarding pass, After weighing the case the labels are printed and attached to the bags and the case is put onto the belt we then go to the adjacent TUI check in desks where they check our passport and boarding pass and then we go to through to security. Last time at Birmingham there was TUI staff who check all necessary documents while we were in the queue, also there are staff milling about near the scales to assist where needed. Keep well.
