Rare KKB Posted September 15, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 15, 2022 (edited) OK heading out Sunday on Discovery Princess with DH & his aunt & uncle. They are in their 70s & his uncle cannot walk long distances. I have been asking about what excursions they would like to do & they just want to get off at each port & walk around. We are fine with this, but will there be any long treks to get from the ship to each town? There are often golf carts to run those with mobility issues from the ship to the port area in the Caribbean--will they have these in AK? First AK cruise for DH & I--old had in the Caribbean, so feel out of sorts! THANKS! Edited September 15, 2022 by KKB
Northern Aurora Posted September 15, 2022 #2 Share Posted September 15, 2022 In Juneau you the majority of ships dock downtown with one exception; when docking at the exception there is a shuttle which runs downtown for a slight fee. Check the Juneau port schedule to determine your docking. In Ketchikan, unless your ship docks at Ward Cove, you will be docking downtown. In Sitka your ship will dock at the cruise terminal several miles out of town. The company which owns the cruise terminal provides a free shuttle from the terminal to the Harrigan Centennial Center which is located in downtown Sitka.
Rare karatemom2 Posted September 15, 2022 #3 Share Posted September 15, 2022 In our experience with all of these ports, you may be walking for a good way depending on the location of your dock. And even if you are on one of the docks closer to town, if you are planning on exploring the towns by foot, that will entail quite a bit of walking. We have never seen golf cart transfers at the ports. Most people are either walking into town or heading off on an excursion from the port. If the uncle can't walk long distances, maybe you need to consider using a wheelchair or walker of some sort for your port visits.
Northern Aurora Posted September 15, 2022 #4 Share Posted September 15, 2022 The two ports I can think of which use golf cart short transfers are Skagway (at the Rail Road berths) and Icy Strait Point (for folks with mobility issues dealing with the long dock). Lorabelle Posted September 16, 2022 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2022 There was a golf cart transfer from the ship to the shuttles in Sitka when we were there this summer.
Rare GaryWT Posted September 17, 2022 #6 Share Posted September 17, 2022 Was just at all 3 ports. On Norwegian we’re were parked at all the outer ports so took the free shuttle to town. Ketchikan and a golf cart shuttle to get from the boat to the bus shuttles.
