India overland trip from a cruise - visa question

Please, can anyone answer this question.

I have a question for those who will be going on the India overland excursion regarding the Sri Lanka visa. On the Princess information page, it states that cruise ship passengers are considered "in transit" as long as they arrive and depart on the same ship and will not be restricted from going ashore. Does anyone know if the Sri Lanka ETA will be accepted for those of us who will be leaving Sri Lanka for India by air and not departing on the same ship we arrived on?  On Sri Lanka visa information pages, I have seen travelers considered to be "in transit" as those who arrive by air and are continuing their travel by air and remain in the airport. But I have seen nothing about cruise ship passengers arriving one way and departing another. Do we need to get a different type of visa?? Thanks for any information. And, yes, I know we can't apply for anything until December11, which is 90 days before arrival in Sri Lanka.
