Arriving in port without anything planned

Yes, you can do that.  We just did that last week in Bonaire, you can see my review below, with Voyager Tours.  BUT, it might be harder to accommodate 8 people.  There is a row of colorful tents (you can see from the ship) where the tour operators set up.  They can explain to you exactly what is included with a picture board.  There is also a taxi stand outside the port which lists prices and tours, but personally, I would want a tour from a tour operator.  Not sure if the taxis can accommodate 8 people.

The photo with the colorful tents is very early in the morning before most of them had set up.  The port exit was about 1/2 block to the right in that photo. Our tour departed at 9am.

The photo of the taxi stand is right as you exit the small port area.

We will be there next week, 2 adults and 2 kids.  We are renting a pick up truck for the day, and must sees you can recommend?  How was the weather?

When you get your rental, ask them to mark on the map the places where flamingos tend to hang out, you might enjoy seeing the salt flats, or if there is not a ship at the salt pier, you can try snorkeling here or just about any beach.  Dive/snorkel  sites are marked with a painted rock (they were yellow when we were there with the name of the site marked in black letters).  There are a ton of wild donkeys on the North east side of the Island.  Not sure if any of these would be a must see for you but things that you may enjoy,
