I thought mess around and found out meant a spouse found someone messing around on them leading to the #1 category. Not really sure what messed around and found out could mean otherwise. A person falling to their death doesn’t really find out anything as they are dead before they could “find out” whatever they should’ve learned not to do. Perhaps your words got autocorrected. Well there's another version of that phrase using a less family-friendly word than "Messed" No one innocently falls overboard. If you accidentally fall overboard (meaning you weren't trying to end things), you were doing something stupid at the time. Like the teenager a few years ago trying to get to the adjoining room by climbing over the balcony. Or most famously, the grandfather dangling the grandkid out the window. But I have seen many times where someone is sitting on their balcony rail with their back to the ocean. One slip and it would be overboard. Even seen it in ports with the pier cement below. Just flat out stupid to do.
