Book first, then add credits?

We had OBC that we were able to use when booking excursions and specialty dining reservations on the Carnival website. All of the rules read that they couldn't be used until we were actually onboard, but the website let us use them months ago. We sail in 9 days so fingers crossed.

Book the cruise on a courtesy hold. This way you can pick the exact room you want.  They will hold the booking for 72 hours.  Once booked, then call Carnival and ask them to apply the credits.

My experience has been that credits can't be used to cover the deposit.
