Croatia - Royal Caribbean

I will be on Explorer of the Seas in September for a once in a lifetime cruise for my 70 yo mother. Our first port of call is Split, Croatia, which is where my grandfather (mother's dad) is from. Has anyone ever self toured/explored the city on your own? Maybe with a local taxi? Would this be feasable in your opinion? We would really love to visit the huge Craotian library in the city but, I am all for safety first, followed by convenience and being able to do this in a 9 hour cruise stop. Thank you for any experience or information that you can give.

We were in Split last November on Brilliance.  You can walk from the ship into Old Town on your own.  If you wanted to visit other areas around Split, taxis are readily available.
