Gibraltar without the apes?

Recommended Posts

We will be in Gibraltar for  a very short day.  We have done the Top the Rock with the apes before and it was fine.  However, we have one lady in our group who is fearing the ape visit.  Are there other tours around Gibraltar that don't involve the apes?  Any company recommendations appreciated.  Also, our last (and only other time there) we stopped "downtown" for a very quick stop at a glass factory/shop.  It looked like a fun area to eat/shop, etc.  How far is that from the ship?  Doable by taxi?  What time do the shops open?  We have a very early afternoon "all aboard".   Any recommended shops or early lunch spot?

Thanks to all for any insight/recommendations, etc.

Gibraltar without the apes?

Assuming you will be up there  in a vehicle of some description, the person with the fear of apes could simply stay inside the vehicle for the short duration of that stop, and if she does not want to see them even from the inside of the vehicle, could cover eyes with a scarf or some other item.

Could you be referring to Casemates Square for eating/shopping?

Easiest way to find the location would be to google the "glass factory and shop" as results should give you an address.

The historic Main Street area is walkable from the ship, so definitely okay in a taxi.  All the food we came across is a bit what we call in the UK  'chips with everything' but we had a pleasant lunch in an outdoor cafe, as far as I remember.

If any of your group are interested in naval history, the museum(s) (I think there are several) look worth a visit, though we did not visit, as we used up most of our time going up the rock on the cable car.

and , yes, the apes are aggressive and to be avoided (but when you see how some tourists treat them, its not surprising).

Yes, Gibraltar Crystal was in Casemates Square.

Sadly it closed several years ago.

I agree with your friend. These “apes” can get aggressive. She should stay on the ship and enjoy the sea views. Gibraltar is underwhelming and a waste of money.

They are not apes, they are Monkeys.(Barbary Macaques)

They are not aggressive animals, but can be driven to be aggressive by idiotic tourists who touch them, get too close and carry food in rucksacks and plastic bags.

Nobody charges you to enter Gibraltar so can't understand what you wasted your money on. Your adventurous nature probably took you on tour of Matalan, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons and some pharmacy  (not that you actually purchased anything)

However you think that the couple of Cartons of B+H or Superkings and that bottle of cheap whisky you bought was money really well spent.

Rather than staying on the ship, some should be staying at home.
