Bonine Questions

Recommended Posts

Good Morning everyone ~ my family is taking our first cruise shortly. We have used dramamine in the past with car sickness. But this seems to make us tired *even the non drowsy kind*. For those of you who take Bonine, what kind of dosage is for adults and what kind for 9 yr boy? Would it be taken in the am and/or pm? We have the seabands and i am thinking of getting the ginger for myself. I dont do well with meds. Thanks for your input!! :)

First, be advised that you will probably not require any medication.

If you want to be pre-cautionary, even 1/2 of a tiny Bonine at bedtime can be enough to keep your mind at ease -- that's what my mom did when she cruised with us. (Maximum dose is 1-2 tablets per 24 hour period -- I'm reading this from the box)

Be forewarned -- consumption of any alcohol may result in the same Dramamine-type drowsiness you've previously experience -- so you want to take the smallest possible dosage of Bonine.

Bonine is not recommended for children under age 12. I can tell you that even in the rockiest of seas, neither of my children (who have been on 5 cruises between ages 5-16) have ever experienced motion sickness.

Natural remedies include anything ginger-based (gingerale, ginger candies, etc) and red apples (the apples are a trick our waiter taught us one night -- it's a treatment, not a precautionary measure).

Hi luv2travel29, My friend and I both use an rx that is equal to Bonine. We take 25mg the night before we sail and 1 on the night we sail, about 10pm. We have never had a problem. since Bonine is over the counter, check to see if there is anything besides meclazine in it and then ask Dr. Hope this helps.

My husband and I each took a full pill of the "less drowsy" Bonine during the first few days of our cruise in February and while we didn't feel nauseous, it did make us drowsy. We should have tried half a pill, but didn't. My boys, who are 9, took half a pill and were fine. They certainly didn't seem sleepy! The box says to check with your doctor regarding dosage for kids under 12. I called our pediatrician before we left and she said that half a pill of either Bonine or Dramamine was fine for them (and my boys are on the small side of 9).

I am highly susceptible to motion sickness. I take one in the morning and one in the evening, before going to bed. Doesn't make me drowsy, although I sleep like a baby on the ship.:D

My wife takes one in the morning, and about half way through the cruise stops taking them, entirely.

YMMV,

Hypo

Since you have never cruised before you don't know how you will feel and there is nothing worse than feeling seasick and once it hits all you an do is go to bed and sleep it off.

As a precaution I would take one Bonnine the morning of your cruise and maybe the first day or so. If the seas are calm then try going without, if you feel at all quesy then start back up.

I take one every day of a cruise just because I have been seasick and it was horrible, why take the chance. I have no side effects at all and do not feel drousy. Take it each night if your worried about that...

Ginger gave me bad headaches.

My 2 sons both take bonnine also. One does get airsick so not taking a chance there. The other one after 2 days or so I quit giving it to him and he was fine. As your doc what the dosage should be.

Enjoy your cruise!

We had 2 days last week on the Navigator that were very rough. My hubby who has spent his life on sport fishing boats was even a little "iffy". My daughter and I are both very prone to motion sickness. We took 2 bonines per day and had absolutely no problems. 3 others who thought they were "tough" needed to start their own dosage. Our 2 year old granddaughter acted as if nothing was happening at all.

Just take the precaution of taking at least 1 per day. Taking it after you start feeling badly is not going to work nearly as well.

thanks everyone!

twinsmom: my son is on the 10 yr old small side! (not good for a hockey player) but i give him a half tablet of dramamine so i would do the same for bonine. my hubby is the bad one, he took one of those casino boats out of new york and was green for days... but you cannot compare the explorer to one of those small casino boats...so i am hoping for the best for all of us.... thanks again! :)

Hi Luvtotravel29,

Perhaps the car sickness is a blessing in disguise in that you can try the ginger and wristbands to determine if they work for you.

The ginger tablets have been very effective for us and we did not experience any side effects. But, take a couple ginger tablets, load the family in the car and give the ginger tablets a road test.

We also use Bonine, the 24-hour non-drowsy formula, but we take half doses. The trick is to get it into your system BEFORE you sail. If you drive or fly, take a half tablet 30 minutes before you drive or fly.

Then if the ship's rocking the first night, take another half tablet. It helps you sleep in a new bed, anyway. That should do you for the first 48 hours. We then take another half tablet PER DAY, but only if the seas are rocky. On a 7 day cruise, we take a total of 2 - 4 half doses, and usually not every day, depending on sea conditions. If we get up in the AM and the seas are rough, we'll take a half dose. Same at night if the seas are rough.

It has to be adjusted to the person's tolerance for motion. Half doses 12 hours apart help with the motion sickness, but keep the drowsies away. Once it's in your system, it's a matter of keeping it up as needed.

Non-drowsy Dramamine and Bonine (and the Canadian equivalent Bonamine) are the same thing - brand names of Meclizine. The older Dramamine was Dimenhydrinate - which induced much more drowsiness.

My only point here... If non-drowsy Dramamine doesn't work for you, don't bother with Bonine.
