Dunedin - seeing wildlife?

We’re a family of 4, we’ll be in Dunedin for the day next January. If we hire a car for the day, and children want to see wildlife, what  should we be trying to do with our day?

Drive up the Otago Peninsula to the Albatross Sanctuary then go to the Penguin Place nearby. You will probably have to book for both of these places. Stop at Larnach Castle on the way back into the city.

We hired a car through Pegasus with pick up at Port Chalmers. A local guide in at the terminal suggested adding in a detour to Allan’s beach on our way back from the albatross centre. Kids (7 & 10) loved the beach and running away from the waves as they came in. I can confirm that there were wild sea lions on the beach.

 

The amount of bird life at Tiaroa Head is insane!
