Safety?

Is it safe for 2 women to be walking outside of the cruise ship terminal to go to the beaches?  I've read there's police around just outside the terminal (near Umbrella street and pink alley).  But what about outside of that area?

I wouldn't try to walk to the beaches, but you can get a taxi just outside the port in the parking lot that will give you a price and you pay when you get back to the port.
