In situations like this, I ask myself: what would happen if I couldn't show up for this super-important thing because I was in the hospital, but could be released back to work in a few more days?

 

I'm pretty sure operations would go on with a slight glitch, and within a week or two no-one would notice the difference.

 

Unless the person involved is a majority owner and a major crisis has brewed that no-one else can solve, the company is being completely unfair.
