OBSERVATIONS FROM THE POOP DECK SEASCAPE FEB19-26 2023

Did some 'digging' on one of my favorite topics, 'tipping'. and 'dug' this up.

Tip” shows up in Grose's Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue in 1789, which includes Thomas Harman's list of 1566. 'To tip' defined as to give or lend. (Tip me a hog means give me a shilling). In 1864, Camden's Dictionary adds the definition of tip as 'douceur' (a bribe or gratuity to ‘sweeten’ a deal). And then “tip” makes its way into Webster's Dictionary sometime between 1864 and 1898 editions as 'to give a present to' i.e. 'as to tip a servant'.

One  academic researcher suggests the root of the word 'tip' may stem from the Roman Era. The Latin words stips, stipis, noun meaning small offering (stipend) (Hemenway 1993).

Words become backcronyms.  The English use of the word cabal to mean a group of conspirators predates the nefarious schemes of these five men by at least 25 years." However, the word “cabal” was used to represent the names of five ministers of King Charles II. The ministers, Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley, and Lauderdale, were at the bottom of various political intrigues in the early 1670s. According to history, these five, plus others, defaulted on the national debt by closing the exchequer in 1670, started a war with Holland in 1672, and entered into an alliance with the hated French in 1673. (David Wilton, Word Myths: Debunking Linguistic Urban Legends. Oxford University Press, 2009)

Others attribute 'tip' to the "16th century England, and T.I.P. became a backcronym where brass urns with the inscription "To Insure Promptitude" were placed first in coffeehouses and then in local pubs" (Brenner 2001) (Schein,Jablonski and Wohlfahrt 1984). Initialism and abbreviation have been used for centuries ( R.I.P. / R.S.V.P.). Twinning's Coffeehouse Museum has its very own example on display of a wooden box with the initials inscribed on its side, T.I.P. They posted their meaning of the inscription to read "To Improve Promptness".

"Although tipping is never compulsory, there is strong social expectation that it will be given, especially in economies where employees are working for low wages."

Your butler 'might' tell you to pick out whatever you like and he will have it delivered to your stateroom, complimentary. (It all depends on the "butterfly of happiness") But in any event, might I suggest evening gloves by Cornelia James as a 'nice touch'.

On Seascape now.  Yacht club.  Cruise is great. Fantastic Mardi Gras party in atrium. Crazy!!   Just finished legit Lobster Tail Pizza in Marketplace Buffet! Oh, and gelato is included in yacht club!   Got it once today, no scan of card,  son got it with a scan, no charge!   They all insist it is included, yet YC concierge say it is not. All great on Seascape!!  Morpheus, still trying to figure out who you are 😉. Have a great night!!

I made a quick appearance at the Mardi Gras party.

Are the wine options in there any different from other places on the ship? Is there any reason why anyone with a beverage package would even use that, aside from the "experience"?

You are absolutely correct. Everything outside the Yacht Club is really for up charging those outside the YC. Same with the ice cream. Unless one just doesn't want to take a moment to return to the YC. But then again the staff in the YC ponder why anyone would want to leave 'the ship with in a ship' ? The best entertainers perform in the Top Sail Lounge in the evenings, they try to insulate YC guests from standing in lines to get off the ship and on the ship. Our butlers, Gusti, Anna Lisa, Kevin, Vishnu, Predeep, JoEl, and Glen have all tried (and succeeded) in escorting us to either the Production Show theatres or the Le Cabaret Rouge. They come in very handy 'adjusting'  tables and chairs for better viewing angles (cruise ship furniture is heavy) and a couple of times they have procured theatre seating that was occupied by children saving seats and other times removing interlopers seated in 'our' seats in the YC reserved section. (Now that was a real 'treat').

It is only 'fun' when there are others around to witness you. Unfortunately everytime we pass by the place is empty.

well now i am thinking i could turn it into a performance piece and my husband is saying please don't encourage her.

I was wondering if you could find out if the Seascape provides Chai Tea Latte (liquid starbucks mix) and RumChatta in YC or any of the other bars

It does not appear on this down loaded bar list.

Last night in Le Cabaret Rouge, Samulous took the night off and Kalie, the female vocalist returned. (This time she she introduced herself as Kalie with a "K".....must be reading CC and read "Calie").

Very few teenagers on this trip. More babies and grade schoolers.

Today is our last day and is marked by the seafood extravaganza on the One Pool Deck. Everyday there is something to look forward to. (it is also 'tip' night and that brings many smiles).

Will be back on board the Seascape in April (one of Kant's keys to happiness "Someone to love, something to do, something to look forward to").

Is the seafood extravaganza a regular YC offering on all ships? I don’t remember seeing it advertised on either of our previous cruises (Meraviglia and Seaview).

Really enjoying your ‘observations’. Will be on the Mera in June and November and the Seascape next January.

Hope they keep eyes out for the interlopers! Looking forward to your April trip. Have a great March and  dealing with our unseasonably hot weather down here in So. Florida.

This is a problem still. Not only with interlopers, but the staff in the Yacht Club are upset with all the Fantasia class guests that are given "access" to the YC. Heard some of these "access" get up as early as 4 am and reserve for themselves the available cabanas (first come ,first serve policy ). Tipped $20 to the pool attendant to make sure these "access" are kept away from our pergola/cabana. (They can't read  or ignore or remove signs). Actual YC guests are oblivious to what is occurring. They don't know that the prime real estate is being occupied by non Yacht Club guests. RCCL has its non suite Pinnacles, Celebrity has its non suite Zeniths and MSC has its non Yacht Club guests with "access".

Towel animal swan greeting this morning.

If anyone is interested. In 3 weeks we hope to be on board the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam in a Pinnacle suite to compare with MSC YC. ("It is now or never"). Will be reporting on their CC Forum.  It will be our first time on Hal in over 30 years, Alaska, 2 lowers on the inside. Yes, inside cabin on an Alaskan cruise. We did not know any better 30 years ago.

We have only been on the ships sailing from Miami or Ft.Lauderdale. Had the seafood extravaganza on these ships at least once per cruise on the YC pool deck. Your butler notifies you of all the events taking place.

I'm confused by what you are referring to for "Fantasia class guests that are given "access" to the YC".  Is there a group outside of YC who can access the Pool Deck?

Sometimes, certain non-YC people are given YC access. It's kind of a "...not what you know but who you know..." thing. Friends/family members of MSC employees, etc.
