wolfie11 Posted February 20, 2023 #5 Share Posted February 20, 2023 I would check out the various 4th of July celebrations in Haines and Skagway. Nobody does the 4th like small towns.
donaldsc Posted February 21, 2023 #6 Share Posted February 21, 2023 Two not to be missed places: Hammer Museum. A really unique museum. https://www.hammermuseum.org/ American Bald Eagle Foundation. https://www.baldeagles.org/. Wolfie11's idea of the July 4th parade is a great one. Last summer we were in Wrangell (population 2055) on 4 July. Half of the town was in the parade and the other half was on the sidewalk watching the parade. It would have been a really bad day to rob the banks on Main St as every law enforcement vehicle on the island was in the parade. DON

DougH Posted February 21, 2023 #8 Share Posted February 21, 2023 Rent a car and drive out of town. Take a flight with Mountain Flying Service over Glacier Bay.

oaktreerb Posted February 21, 2023 #10 Share Posted February 21, 2023 Steve Kroschel’s wild life sanctuary. Look it up online. You can’t just drop in, maybe the ship will have an excursion. You’d need transportation to get there. Not sure about what’s available on July 4. I think in Alaska the fireworks are late July 3rd and/or Early July 4th. donaldsc Posted February 22, 2023 #11 Share Posted February 22, 2023 I really like Haines. This is a good article on the town - https://createyourownroadshow.com/things-to-do-haines-alaska/ DON
Sailin Gal Posted February 22, 2023 #12 Share Posted February 22, 2023 After watching videos from different Haines excursions we decided to rent a car and explore on our own. Would do that again in a heartbeat.
mlgb Posted February 23, 2023 #13 Share Posted February 23, 2023 Go over the hill on Mud Bay road (you can even walk it) to look for eagles on the Chilkat River. Walk through Fort Seward Haines Brewery They used to run a school bus on a loop for cruise passengers.

Which rental car company did you use, were they easy to get to? TIA

The car was waiting for us in a lot near the pier, and we just dropped it off there when we were done. There are few different directions you can go from Haines. We drove the Haines Highway up to the border crossing, then went back to Haines and then took Lutak Road to Chilkoot Lake Recreation Area. Both were scenic drives, running along the Chilkat River, Lutak Inlet, and Chilkoot River. Chilkoot lake was beautiful, too. There were plenty of places to pull over and take photos, and we were there in late August when the salmon were running, so we got to watch black and brown bears fishing in the Chilkoot River. Plans had included some hiking and a drive down to Chilkat State Park too, but DH wasn't feeling well so we returned to the ship early.
