Rare cruiser3775 Posted March 21, 2023 #1 Share Posted March 21, 2023 Yesterday we were in Picton, lovely sunny day. Back on the ship at dusk, the Captain announced heavy seas and gale force winds coming, so we couldn't safely get into Wellington port until mid morning. We stayed overnight in Picton, which is very sheltered. This morning, we were told weather still no good, so we are skipping Wellington and going onto Napier, which has reopened in a limited way after the recent floods. Of course, as we are now sailing past Wellington, the weather is bright and sunny and the seas are calm enough. Still I'm glad we didn't cross from the south to north islands in a gale. The Cook Strait can be diabolical.
buchhalm Posted March 21, 2023 #3 Share Posted March 21, 2023 Of all the stops we had on our January NZL cruise, Wellington was the only one we didnt enjoy as much as the others.
Rare cruiser3775 Posted March 21, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted March 21, 2023 But it is a shame to miss a port, though the weather would have been uninviting if we had got there. Not keen on walking around "Windy Wellington" in the rain.
Nang Posted March 27, 2023 #5 Share Posted March 27, 2023 P&O cancelled Wellington as well last week and the Fioordlands the week before.
shuyak Posted March 28, 2023 #6 Share Posted March 28, 2023 Norwegian Spirit was scheduled to arrive Port Chalmers (Denedin) 8 AM on March 21. Around 6:30 AM, the Captain announced due to strong wind/wave, we would not be allowed to dock at the port. The wave was as high as deck 12 at times, and the next day we saw a little penguin in deck 12 brought up by the wave. Some people ware very sick, we were fine with the Scopolamine transdermal patch. We were disappointed to miss our tour to see yellow eyed penguins and royal abatross but safety should always come first. We did have a great day at Wellington with the guided tour in Zealeandier Ecosancutary and a visit to Te Papa Museum.
